Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Two new books on business and personal bankruptcy begin with the premise that those considering debt discharge or reorganization often do not have the money to hire a lawyer or pay court fees. These manuals are revised editions reflecting recent changes in the laws, procedures, and forms and are geared for those planning to wade through the process themselves. Anosike offers painstakingly detailed instructions on the nature of bankruptcy and the filing process, and the requisite sections distinguishing the types of bankruptcy are present. Ample appendixes provide court addresses, glossaries, lists of state exemptions, and bibliographies. A 50-state summary of bankruptcy statutes including legal citations is a thoughtful plus. These books do not lack for content, but they are sometimes tedious and generally not as readable or clear as Stephen Elias's How To File for Bankruptcy (Nolo Pr., 1991. 3d ed.) or John Ventura's The Bankruptcy Kit ( LJ 6/1/91).

From Booklist

Reviewed with Benji O. Anosike's How to File for Chapter 11 Business Bankruptcy with or without a Lawyer.

Bankruptcy is booming in the U.S., and yet individuals and business people who find themselves in dire straits may feel lawyers' fees are the last straw on a load already piled too high. Prolific author (and do-it-yourself publisher) Anosike comes to the rescue with these two titles, designed to help people with little or no legal experience successfully declare personal bankruptcy or file for Chapter 11. Written in plainspoken language and amply illustrated with quirky black-and-white charts, drawings, and pictures, both books provide step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. Appendixes outline specific information for residents of different states and include sample forms and glossaries that help demystify legal jargon. Though library patrons will hope never to have use for either book, many will need them and be grateful for access nonetheless. Leon Wagner

1.0 out of 5 stars I sent it back to Amazon., March 27, 2004
By A Customer
I was very disappointed in this book. The author took his old edition, literally made pen markings for most of the updates, inserted a few new pages (that dramatically varied in typeface, etc.), wrote "updated for 2003" on the cover, photocopied it, bound it, and published it. The production values were so bad, I'd be afraid to trust the editorial content.
I own (and have studied) several books on filing your own bankruptcy, and this is the only one I ever returned. It was hurridly written. It's not nearly as good as the other books in this category, and it's more expensive. I write consumer bankruptcy software for a living.
