Gibbons Volume II,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Volume II: 395 A.D. -- 1185 A.D. (Hardcover)
With volumne II picking up exactly where Volume I ended, it is exactly what I would have expected. Gibbons' style continues unabated. While it is slow reading, with so much information to absorb (and I find myself having to go back and clarify the specific argument between Arianism and Orthodoxy...) it clarifies so much of what I generally knew about the decline of Rome. I see now that this is the source for so very much that appears in other texts.
I absolutely love his style, and feel that I am back in the 18th and early 19th century...perhaps sitting in his garrett, or visiting in Lake Geneva. He is wonderful! |
