5.0 out of 5 stars Clutter Kryptonite! May 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I tried a few times to clear my place out and whilst I would make a dent, it was only ever short-lived. After reading this book through, I realized where I was going wrong - I was trying to do one room at a time. I'd have a spare weekend and I'd move everything out of one room(further cluttering the other rooms in the process), get it looking fairly decent and then pat myself on the back and relax, all the while planning to tackle another room the following weekend.

Only, by the time I would get around to tackling another room a few weeks later, the first room was cluttered again with new mess and the other rooms were still holding some of the things I pulled out of the first one. The situation couldn't continue like this - it was getting quite embarrassing.

When my sister came to visit, she could tell I was getting stressed about the situation. She recommended getting this book and taking a week off work and just handling it. So I did, and frankly, it feels great. I'm sat here on day 8 in the middle of a tidy living room, admiring my handiwork and I can't help but smile. Really simple book but there's some solid advice in here and if it's taught me anything, it's that you need a plan and you need to stick to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd found this book sooner! May 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It almost seems crazy to me that I would need to buy a book to tell me how to manage the clutter around my home and yet I've bought 3! That said, there is a lot of good advice in this one and it gave me the plan of attack I needed to deal with an issue that has been bothering me for far too long (but one that I'd always find an excuse to put off). The book is exactly what it claims to be and sure enough, 6 days after getting started, my home looks like it did when we first moved in. If you're wondering why just 6 days - I had a particularly productive day on day two and got day three done as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Do You Have "The Clutter Gene?" November 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Anyone who has watched the television show Hoarders: Buried Alive with a combination of horror and fascination will greatly appreciate Vanessa Johnson's new book, Declutter! The 7-Day Declutter Boot Camp: Minimalist Strategies to Organize, Simplify and Declutter Your Home and Life. In the introduction, the author shares openly her history growing up in a chronically cluttered house, and the effect it had on her. When she set up housekeeping on her own, she succeeded in keeping her house clean, but the "clutter gene" seems to have won out for awhile: she simply couldn't keep up with the piles of laundry, boxes of miscellany, and out-of-place items all over the house. Finally learning (through a concerned relative) that she was perpetuating the clutter from which she'd come, she came up with a method for keeping her home both clean and clutter-free. This book is her way of sharing her method with others.

The word "method" is used advisedly here; Ms. Johnson has found a very methodical means of keeping a clutter-free home. Any reader with a sincere desire to clean and declutter their home--and the willingness to follow through with a seven-day program--will find this a most useful book.

Ms. Johnson has titled her book Declutter! A 7-Day Decluttering Boot Camp; it lays out a program for getting one's home entirely clutter-free in one week. Accordingly, she devotes one day (and one chapter) to each task: Laundry, Kitchen and Pantry, and so on, until the entire house is covered. This is a useful approach, and one just about anyone can use as a template for decluttering their home. My only critique is that an important oversight managed to slip through the editorial process. In the Conclusion, a sentence reads, "Living in a clutter-free home is like living in chaos.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bootcamp Ever! June 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very simple book and will help you to get on track and stay on track to a more beautiful, the cluttered home. I really enjoyed the authors openness and honesty about how a messy home made her feel. This is especially important when we are raising children. Great, quick read.

4.0 out of 5 stars the Motivation I Needed to Change my House. Forever January 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to laugh when I started reading this book. I can relate to so many things Vanessa says. I too grew up in a messy house. There were seven of us, my parents and five kids. My mom worked part-time and she hated doing laundry so even on a good day, our house looked like your local laundry except an extremely messy one. There were piles of clothes everywhere and I mean everywhere! In the kitchen, in the TV room, on our beds, under our beds, in the wardrobes on hangers, in the wardrobes on the floor and in the bathroom. We used to just step over them. When I got my own house I quickly continued my mom's habit of hating to do laundry. I mean, who likes doing laundry anyway? I started having dreams - I'm not joking - about piles of clothes suffocating me. And I started to get depressed. Finally my husband said to me one day that if we didn't sort the laundry problem, he was going to throw all the clothes in the bin and stop our credit cards so we couldn't buy more. He was as frustrated as I was. But I needed help to clean the mess. More importantly I need motivation, a reason. Vanessa's book gave me that reason. I think she'd be proud of my house now.
