Book Description

July 19, 2002
In the Deco Style unashamedly celebrates the most deliberately elaborate of twentieth-century decorative styles: Art Deco. The sheer diversity and brilliance of the achievements of both interior designers and architects who have contributed to the Deco style are beautifully illustrated in a visual history linked by the commentaries of leading experts from London and New York.

Art Deco developed from a characteristically French image of luxury and refinement. Like Art Nouveau, it was not a totally homogeneous style and a number of design characteristics which came later to be known as 'Deco' were subsequent developments of the essentially French style; most interesting among these was the burgeoning Streamline Moderne in the United States, in which Modernist and Deco elements mingled dramatically.

In its purest forms, however, Art Deco was essentially a pursuit of refinement, often through the use of exotic and unusual materials: rich woods, novel veneers or inlays and lustrous lacquers. Later American designers were also to bring similar elaboration to the use of metal in some of the most notable interiors of thirties New York. Indeed the Deco phenomenon, far from declining after the famous 1925 Paris exhibition, continued through the thirties and forties in America and received the accolade of a revival on both sides of the Atlantic in the early seventies. This is the first book to treat Deco as an ongoing phenomenon, as susceptible to revival and adaptation as all the great decorative styles of the past.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This fascinating book surveys the style known as Art Deco and assesses its development, its relationship to other artistic styles and to societal changes, and its popularization through mass production. The authors discuss all the major designers and many minor ones as well. All artistic fields involved in the deco style are discussed: architecture, interior design, advertising, furniture, ceramics, jewelry, and, of course, industrial design. They provide a fairly evenhanded coverage of the impact and manifestations of deco in the United States, England, and Europe. Particularly interesting is their appraisal of the deco revival which began in the 1960s. This beautifully designed book with hundreds of illustrations is highly recommended. Lynell A. 2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, January 16, 2008
This review is from: In The Deco Style (Hardcover)
This book has some very nice pictures in it, but it is lacking a lot. Its really disorganized into a art deco mismash. The art deco movement was so huge, its hard to place into an entire book, but there are somethings I would have liked to see in here. Some of the buildings in Los Angeles which has some amazing art deco architecture. The author completely skips over designers like Russell Wright and Walter Von Nessen. There there are things that plain just don't fit in here, there are many Moderne buildings, which is close, but not exactly deco, there is a random page on 1930's fashion and a whole section of 1980's art deco reproductions. I don't want to see reproductions, I want to see the real thing! I wish more would have been put in about buildings in America, but I understand this book was published in the UK.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1980's Coffee Table Book, March 23, 2006
This review is from: In the Deco Style (Hardcover)
"In the Deco Style" was first published by Rizzoli Publishing in 1987. In the nearly twenty years since it was published, a technological revolution has taken place in art book publishing. Today's art books are bigger and brighter and of a much higher print quality. There are many nice color photos in this book but on the printed page, they come across as comparatively dull and muted. If you want to see the difference that twenty years can make take a look at "Art Deco 1910-1939". In that book, the colors are warm and the photographs almost jump off the printed page.

This book was written 15-20 years after the Art Deco revival of the late 1960's. For its time, the book does a very good job of describing the Art Deco movement with all its many different schools. However, an additional two decades of scholarship has taken place and we now have a much more nuanced understanding of the time.

If you are an seriously interested in Art Deco, this book is very fine purchase. It is reasonably priced and there are many interesting photographs. However, if you are new to the subject, purchase "Art Deco 1910-1939", the single best coffee table style of book on the subject.
