Book Description

September 29, 2012 0415898676 978-0415898676 1
Decoding Anorexia is the first and only book to explain anorexia nervosa from a biological point of view. Its clear, user-friendly descriptions of the genetics and neuroscience behind the disorder is paired with first person descriptions and personal narratives of what biological differences mean to sufferers. Author Carrie Arnold, a trained scientist, science writer, and past sufferer of anorexia, speaks with clinicians, researchers, parents, other family members, and sufferers about the factors that make one vulnerable to anorexia, the neurochemistry behind the call of starvation, and why it’s so hard to leave anorexia behind. She also addresses:
• How environment is still important and influences behaviors
• The characteristics of people at high risk for developing anorexia nervosa
• Why anorexics find starvation “rewarding”
• Why denial is such a salient feature, and how sufferers can overcome it
Carrie also includes interviews with key figures in the field who explain their work and how it contributes to our understanding of anorexia. Long thought to be a psychosocial disease of fickle teens, this book alters the way anorexia is understood and treated and gives patients, their doctors, and their family members hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last October 11, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The delight of reading a serious science book, carefully and skillfully interwoven with Carrie's personal story, makes this so much more readable than the normal academic books on the subject. The role of new research and new science is clearly explained and the chapter on the brain is witty and informative. I can see it providing "light bulb" moments all over the world for patients, parents, carers and clinicians.

It is sad that the professional world is so divided on this contentious subject, especially as anorexia is the most lethal psychiatric disorder of all time. Let's hope this beautifully researched and wonderfully written book will become a staple on the bookshelves of anyone who is affected by an eating disorder.

Well done, Carrie Arnold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that brings us up to date! September 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
Decoding Anorexia is the right book by the ideal storyteller. Understanding the science around eating disorders is a bit like a detective story: it can be difficult to tell myth from current information, and harder still to understand it. Arnold tells the story in a clear, engaging, and witty voice. You'll understand why we used to think the way we did, and what we can do with the information we now have. We've entered a new and truly optimistic age of treatment and this is the guidebook to read first. I recommend Decoding Anorexia for parents, professionals, and everyone interested in a ripping good story!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Neurobiology of Anorexia Explained November 3, 2012
By Lisa R.
Format:Paperback
Carrie Arnold provides a compelling, cogent explanation of the brain processes at play in Anorexia Nervosa. Arnold weaves together a fascinating account of the genetics and neuroscience behind the disorder, and humanizes her scientific explanations with reflections on her own process of recovery from the disease. Arnold immerses us in the latest thinking and research, and powerfully debunks common myths about anorexia, including the myth that anorexia is a choice or that parents cause their children's anorexia. This book is an indispensable resource for both clinicians and families who have a loved one suffering from anorexia.
