5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for the plane or train. Learn French wine basics fast.
Downloaded Andrew's wonderfully written precis on French wine and enjoyed reading it too. He outlines the basics in a clean, concise, and easy-to-digest manner. Also, appreciated his personal recommendations for wine (with points points) and glad he highlighted some of the major regions you'd see on a wine list, in the stores, or online. Looking forward to his next...

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't really decode anything
This is a very, very short guide and it focuses mostly on geography and appellations. Nuits-Saint-Georges is in the Côte d'Or in Burgundy in the East of France, and they make wines from Pinot Noir. Here's a list of the 61 Grand Crus Classés in Bordeaux. That sort of thing. There's hardly any information about how all of these different wines taste and differ, and...

5.0 out of 5 stars I suddenly feel like an expert on French Wine, March 27, 2012

I knew absolutely nothing about French Wine before reading this fantastic short guide to French Wines. Now, I feel much more comfortable walking the aisles of the local wine shops and choosing a wine.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to enhance their wine knowledge without having to plod through hundreds of pages of useless information, which is the case with many of the current French Wine books.
I was able to read "Decoding French Wine: A Beginner's Guide to Enjoying the Fruits of the French Terroir" in just one sitting, and how can you go wrong for just 99 cents.

There's hardly any information about how all of these different wines taste and differ, and when the author recommends a wine, it's never really explained why. To top things off, there's no information about the Loire, Champagne and Alsace, nor Languedoc-Roussillon (important for budget wines).

Even if this book is only one or two bucks, save your money and buy the wine guides from the Dummies series, or the WSET instructional booklet. Considerably more informative and just as easy to read.

How can you write about French wine without the Loire? How can you publish a non-fiction book without a table of contents?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on French Wines, July 22, 2012

My wife is a huge fan of all things France, so on many occasions I've found myself utterly befuddled as I stared at a bottle of French wine and tried to figure out what the heck it was. This book gives an excellent overview of the basics of French wine, with a couple of helpful maps thrown in to help you sort out the regions. It's written in a conversational tone, which I also found nice given the complexity of other French wine guides. And given the price point, this is an easy recommendation. Time to go find myself a killer Bordeaux!

As its getting easier and easier to publish e-books and get them on Amazon, you should really be a little more careful about taking a minimum quality for granted. Head on over to the wikipedia article on French wine. It's vastly more rich in detail and complete in breadth than this book.

This is a very broad spectrum book that briefly touches on all French wine regions and some of their main producers. Could use more detail per region as to best producers and value selections

Ideal for the beginner wine drinker. Brief but clear explanations of the major wine regions of France. Even for a beginning wine drinker, additional information per region would have been helpful.

I have found most wine books to be to detailed and long. "Decoding French wine" is the total opposite of this. The book is short but very informative and takes you through the most important things you need to learn as a beginner!

Enjoy!
