No one should have any hesitation about buying this CD, it is one of the best albums this year, since I have bought it, it's has never been of my CD player- the songs just grab you and your hooked- I think its better than Blurring the Edges. Deconstruction is very easy to listen to, and Merediths voice is excellent. It is a rare album that (in my opinion) that has no weak or filling tracks, my favorite songs are Nobodys Home, Back To Eden and Careful What you wish for. Everyone should buy this CD- it's ace!

This is a good CD, Not a great CD...
However, it is a CD with some GREAT songs! Sin City, Back To Eden, I Have Everything, and Careful What You Wish For, are good enough to justify the cost of the CD all by themselves, and if you like the other songs, which are still pretty good, then that is just a bonus. I believe Meredith Brooks is too important of a song writer to not be working, hopefully she will get back to work soon and make another great album like "Bad, Bad One". If you don't have this album, really, theses songs are very good. If you don't know Meredith Brooks, Start With "Bad, Bad One" or "Blurring Edges" and fall in love with her rock music for grown ups!

I could listen to this CD for hours. In fact, I have been for the past two or three hours straight, at least. There's just something about this music that rests at the surface, and begs to seep in. And when the needle hits (there are actual vinyl effects, complete with surface noise from repeated play on "Bored with Myself"), I'm feeling the satisfaction of a junkie's fix. In 2001, we know that Y2K didn't do much of anything, so that makes the opening track more fun: "...Y2K shuts down L.A./Now you got something to really figure out..." and this follows a reference to Bill and Monica. Remember them? This would be fun in an oldies show. "Lay Down" features Queen Latifah, and it's a groovy track, I tell you, I tell you. As Frank Zappa once said, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." Just listen to it. "I Have Everything" ... rocks. "Cosmic Woo Woo" is just fun. Or is it serious contemplation? I don't know. "Nobody's Home" keeps on the spiritual track with the lines "All she ever wanted was a place on this earth/She shouts for a savior or anyone who'll hear her." The previous "Cosmic Woo Woo" is actually wholly about spiritual issues, believe it or don't, from that title. "All For Nothing" flirts with hip-hop, and is my favorite track here: "After eight years of sharing every dream together we don't even talk/Is that all there is?/What we stood up for Now we stand behind a million locked doors and we can't even say that we'll be friends..." "Back to Eden" against hints at thing celestial. In fact, Meredith thanks God first in the "thank-you's." "Bored with Myself"--aside from employing the vinyl sound effects--make mention of Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Onassis, and... Loretta Lynn? Interesting. Meredith Brooks does indeed remind me a harder-rocking Shania Twain. They probably share influences. Infectious, infectious, infectious.

In a day and age in which the music industry seems infected with lovely, whispy, airy voiced babes, it is a relief to hear a singer with heart, edge and an incredible power in her performance. I am a recent convert to Brooks' stuff, but what a conversion. I have always liked Ethridge, Raitt, Joplin...women with that hard edged voice and soul. Brooks is another of the powerful women of rock. She plays with the lyrics of a song. In Blurring, she whines about wanting it all...I need it...and makes you believe she does. It is a song that shows the insanity of being driven to want it all. In Deconstruction, she finds she has all she needs. Cosmic Woo Woo, is the anthem of all that is wrong with our flip flop society today. Bouncing from one belief to another, without ever really believing in anything. Damn, this is such good stuff. Like a good merlot, Meredith gets better with each new record.

Being a longtime fan of Meredith I knew I had to have this album. And I was not disappointed, just surprised. I should say right off that if you are looking for a carbon copy of Blurring The Edges, forget it. I can't say every track struck me as steller right off, you have to let it grow on you. I will say this: Lay Down (Candles In the Rain) featuring Missy Elliot DOES deserve the term Steller. This is a fantastic song. And although you might laugh at the title Cosmic Woo Woo, I really appreciate the message. Nobody's Home is a beautiful and touching song. I Have Everything is something many people including myself can relate to. This is not Blurring the Edges but that doesn't mean it's not just as good. Deconstruction is a good cd, even a great cd.

I own both Deconstruction and Blurring the Edges, and I found that her current one is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. Blurring the Edges was a good release, but frankly, some songs got me bored. Deconstruction on the other hand, is wonderful. I don't think it ever leaves my CD player. I listen to lots of kinds of music, country, pop, rap, r&b, and rock and this record makes me want to listen to only Meredith. The album has many diffrent sounds on it, appealing to everyone. One minute you're listening to the funny, light Cosmic Woo Woo to the moving Nobody's Home. It's a great album, get it today!

MEREDITH DECONSTRUCTS THE "ONE HIT WONDER" IDEA,
By
This review is from: Deconstruction [ENHANCED CD] (Audio CD)
I absolutely loved Meredith Brooks' "Blurring the Edges." I didn't think it was possible for her to top that effort, but she does so with "Deconstruction." I could hardly wait for the release of her current work, especially since I was aware of her doing a cover of Melanie's classic anthem song, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)." I had some misgivings about Meredith's interpretation of the song when I discovered that Queen Latifah would be doing a rap solo in the song. I admit that I am not a big fan of rap music and I was afraid the song would be ruined by the inclusion of rap. When I first heard the version by Meredith and Queen Latifah, I was flabbergasted. Not only did I fall in love with this version, but I also felt the inclusion of Queen Latifah brought the feeling of the original to a whole new generation of people. The rapping actually makes the song more accessible and easier to relate to. Hats off to Meredith, Queen Latifah, and whoever else had the divine wisdom to include this song on this remarkable piece of artistic creativity. The rest of the CD is just as wonderful as "Lay Down" and worth paying full retail price for. Do not wait until it goes on sale. This music should be heard as soon as possible!

don't get me wrong: it's not a bad album, but ...,
This review is from: Deconstruction [ENHANCED CD] (Audio CD)
The reason I bought this album was, of course, Blurring The Edges. I guess that's the reason why almost anyone else bought it, too. Deconstrucion features one song, called Nobody's Home, which is one of the most touching things I've ever heard, and this song alone is worth buying it. The rest, however, isn't. Don't get me wrong: Deconstruction is not a bad album. It's the perfect album for easy-listening. The songs are nice and rocking, and some of them are bound to be in the charts sooner or later. But Blurring the Edges had only one song I really DIDN`T like, whereas this one has only one song I DO like. The rest isn't bad, it's just mainstream, and the lyrics are mainly about general, well-known thoughts such as „be careful what you wish for". The „Shout" lyrics are quite nice, but they sound as if someone had listened to Alanis` „Ironic" for too long (especially the paragraph about the plane crashing). Blurring the Edges was more exciting, it featured more variety, it was just generally more entertaining. So if you're looking for a Meredith Brooks album to start with, buy Blurring the Edges. Otherwise, if you are a „true fan", you'll probably like this one anyway.

A much belated retraction!,

I was the second person to review "Deconstruction" on this site, and I have to take part of it back. This album is SO much better than "Blurring the Edges" (which, yes, I am still extremely fond of)! The songs are deeper and the music is so much richer. "Shout" is a catchy tune that deserves to be played as loudly as possible; "I Have Everything," I believe, can be related to by anyone; "Nobody Home" is one of the most heartwrenching songs I have ever heard (and the only one I know of that moves me to tears); "All for Nothing" speaks volumes about the meaning that we should all attribute to our lives; and songs such as "Cosmic Woo Woo" and "Back to Eden" are infectious and impossible to get bored with! This is a fantastic CD that only gets better with each listening, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Meredith Brooks is probably the best musician we have performing today, and I for one hope that she'll be around for a long, long time! Great job, Meredith. :)

This is my second MB's cd and it is more than worth the over priced 20 dollars I paid for it. She has put out many CD's and it is so great how she enhanced this one. Not only does it give you a good basis to understand how she feels on many of her songs, but some of the meaning behind them. Not having all the great press or promos she shows that quality is number one. It is not a repeat performance. The same person, same voice, and the same great attitude. Must see the video. Behind the scenes footage gives you an inside look at her life and how it was all put together. Songs come and go but this CD will stay out of your collection and in your player for a very long time.
