Looks Great - Loose Plastic Register - Fit Maybe Off
on March 23, 2013
Just had our floors redone and our metal registers were a mess. I thought these would be a nice change and would match our floors. They matched perfectly. Unlike the box store models these are made of Wood and finished in Poly. The underside is black plastic with an adjustable sliding register, also in plastic.
The fit wasn't as good as the metal registers. They were loose and I put padding in the register cutout to tighten up the fit a bit. They also stick up about a ½ inch from the floor unlike the metal registers that were flush. This is important to note in case you need to place furniture or have an area that is close to a travel area. Due to the variance in grain and finish I did have to move the registers around for the best match to our floors. This is not a negative but meant to make you aware that depending on the finish and grain of your floor, the registers may not match perfectly. I was lucky. Of the several I bought I was able to match up really close for each location. The finish of the registers is pretty good and the wood used in each register matches closely. The wood fins can be a bit rough and might be a splinter issue. We haven't moved in yet but I see my 20 month old playing with our metal register and know I will need to pay close attention to these registers once we move in.
The adjustable plastic register vent works but does not lock in place and often slides to the closed or open position! You will not be able to use them to balance your rooms because it doesn't lock in place. Some type of detent would have worked but they have a smooth glide instead preventing them from locking in place. I actually had to remove them for a few locations so I could get them to fit in two 2 x10 locations I had. It made no difference for me because I try to leave all the registers open fully. I have to go around and makes sure the register are open fully though as they will move to the open or closed positions. The wood slates are not adjustable but are evenly spaced and move air to the left and right. In some situations you may only want the air to move to move to one direction and you will not be able to do so with these units. I had two areas with registers close to a corner I would have liked to been able to adjust them to blow away from the wall.
They look nice in place and I think add to the look floor. If the plastic adjustable register and fit better were better I would have given them a five. For now they work and are real wood with a decent finish. I purchased the 2 x 10 and 4 x 10 units and felt the price was good. I added pictures to show finished installation.
