These collections of contemporary cross-stitch designs from Italy are suitable for embellishing clothing and linens or creating original samplers. Although the examples pictured are worked on even-weave fabric, the designs can be applied to any fabric by using waste canvas, which is pulled out after working. Many of the alphabets have large, colorful figures that would appeal to children; borders are mainly flowers or animals. All patterns are charted in color or black and white, with symbols keyed to DMC thread. These easily worked designs are good additions to public library needlework collections.

Decorative Borders goes beyond the average, plain, frames for finished needlework. Many of these borders are works of art that can stand on their own. I am especially fond of the floral borders, but there are also instructions for borders appropriate for children, kitchen, beach settings, etc. This is a wonderful book for someone who is looking for a small project.
