Serrat obtuvo el 26 de julio del 2000 el Primer Premio Antonio Machado que lo otorga la Fundación Española Antonio Machado, debido al gran trabajo que realizó con este disco en el año de 1969, dando a conocer a muchos, al gran poeta español del siglo XX, de una manera tan hermosa y deliciosa. Este disco contiene 11 poemas de Machado musicalizados por Serrat, y una canción de Joan Manuel dedicada a su poeta. Es otro de los grandes discos de la musica en español, una obra de arte, respaldada por hermosos y grandes poemas y una musica tan cálida y exquisita, acompañada por la particular voz de, para mí, el más grande cantante de España y de los países de lengua española.

I have spent many years in countries where war and despair were around me every day; listening to this music has made my days happier for years. Machado knew how to deliver poetry that could excel the soul, Serrat's magnificent voice and passion makes the delivery sweeter and more profound.

Antonio Machado, poeta que regaló vida en una era de muertes, recibe a través de Serrat el mejor de los homenajes: la música para ser entendido en cualquier lenguaje. Para cualquier hispanoparlante, Cantares es el tema que al menos una vez en la vida va a cantar de principio a fin. Es el tema obligado en colegios, universidades, reuniones cálidas entre buenos amigos. Cantares, es eso, un canto a la vida en contemplación desde un rincón del alma que cree en la paz y en la luz. No dudes en tenerlo en casa!

This is an excellent example of music from Serrat. My wifw is a big fan of both Antonio Machado and Serrat, so for her, this is the ultimate CD.

Artísticamente hablando, este disco es sencillamente fabuloso. Pero técnicamente, coincidiendo con lo expresado en otro review, la calidad del sonido es francamente mala, casi espantosa, pudiendo haber sido mejorada de haber sido reprocesado el sonido utilizando las técnicas mas actuales de remasterización. Una verdadera lástima, aunque queda la esperanza de que algún día podamos escuchar este CD con un sonido mas actualizado y sin ese constante ruido de cinta que caracteriza a la edición actual...

I absolutely love this CD. I first heard the music when a friend of mine played the (then) album just after we both returned from Spain on foreign study in the '70s. The words of Machado said so much to me about what I had seen and learned about Spain, and the music by Serrat couldn't be more appropriate. I managed to buy the album a number of years later on a trip to Mexico and then bought the CD many more years later when it was available from Amazon. In my mind, it's timeless. If you have a sense of the history of Spain and the Spanish people, you will love this music. My personal favorite is La Saeta.

I was heartbroken to find that the quality of the recording is this bad... lots of hissing and noise that could be easily removed with modern technology. It just goes to show that music companies like BMG prefer to put resources on junk than to pay attention to what people really buy, because even with the bad quality, Serrat's work shines. Joan Manuel, if you are reading this, get rid of BMG, go somewhere else. You are too good for that mafia.

Three great things: Machado's poetry, Serrat's tunes and Mirailles arrangements makes this a wonderful record... besides the classic "Cantares" there are many others great songs... a personal fav: "A un olmo seco"...

Este disco de 1969, en el que musicalizando poemas de Antonio Machado dio a conocer a una audiencia mucho mayor la obra del poeta español, es en mi opinión el mejor disco en la ya larga obra de Serrat. Todas las canciones son muy buenas y memorables, pero si uno tiene que elegir las mejores, yo tendria que poner a Cantares, Del Pasado Efimero/Españolito y Parabola.

For those who understand Spanish there probably cannot be a better touch of that strange and wonderful country, of its earnest people, and their buoyant perspective to life. Together with this: some memorable reflections ' "Caminant, no hay camino; se hace camíno al andar"; Traveller, you have no ready-made path forward; you create the path as you go along.
