Biography

As America’s baby boomers moved into their mid teens, Gary began his professional career. For his first hit, "New Orleans," attention was brought to the record by having promotional copies sent to radio stations in sleeves inscribed "Buy U.S. Bonds" - hence at age 19, Gary Anderson became Gary U.S. Bonds.

The follow-up was the now legendary 'party' ... Read more in Amazon's Gary US Bonds Store

For those not familiar with Gary "US" Bonds, he had back to back hits during the early sixties with songs "Qaurter To Three" and "New Orleans". By the mid to late sixties, he had vanished off the pop music radar and was figured for bargain bin obscurity. Flash forward to 1978, a gentleman from New Jersey by the name of Bruce Springsteen is touring across North America in support of "Darkness on the Edge of Town", his follow-up to his breakthrough record, "Born To Run". His tour is a sell-out in theaters and sports arenas and each encore closes out with Bonds' "Quarter To Three", in which at the end of the song he collapses on stage, feigning a heart attack. He is "revived" by band members and contiues on for another 10 minutes to the song. The tour ends at the dawn of 1979. During Bruce's hiatus before the release of "The River", he visits a nightclub off the Jersey turnpike and catches Gary "US" Bonds on stage. Afterwards, they keep in touch. Following the winter leg of the River tour, Bruce & Miami Steve Van Zandt spend a month recording and mixing "Dedication", employing the rest of the E Street Band, plus fellow Jersey notables, including the Asbury Jukes horn section. Mid-April of 1981, Dedication sees thelight of day and has a moderate hit with "This Little Girl", a Springsteen composition. Matter of fact there are only 3 Springsteen compositions (Dedication, Your Love and This Little Girl). Bruce duets with Gary beautifully on the opening track, "Jole Blon", a Cajun traditional with Danny Federici's accordian weaving throughout it.Read more ›

This is Bonds comeback around '81/'82. He is, at various times, upbeat, melancholy and very nostalgic. There are great, throwback dance tracks. Listen for Bruce Springteen in the background on "Jole Blon."

I detest Stringbean with his "i'm in the union an' look how the man has hurt me" when the SOB is rolling in money. And I've never had any use for Bonds either (get me to tell you about a gig my old band did as an opening act for him, sometime.) But "Dedication" was released in '84 {1/24...sorry, it was released in '81, I just purchased it in '84...my mistake} a year of incredible ups and and downs for me, and as is usually the case, music reflected what was happening with me personally. To wit: YES!, Tina Turner and NO, U2. And somehow..."Dedication" enters the picture, Springsteen and all. At first glance - and hearing - URGHHHH, NOOOOO!!!!!! - but when "Turtle's," The local record purveyor, could not..."dispose" of it quickly enough, they put it on its "3 for $5" wall. And still: URGHHH NOOOOO, etc - BUT: Bonds' version of the old Jackson Browne chestnut, "The Pretender" is GREAT. Despite overly-slick "eighties" production, and "Asbury Park blah-blah-blah," Bonds takes a tepid song by a loathesome songwriter, gives it an early-sixties performance...and suddenly, we have a beautiful, soulful, VIABLE bit of music on our hands. If you dig Springsteen, you'll, of course, love his..."presense," but otherwise, "Dedication" becomes (here's this adjective again) viable because of some desperately needed "soul" on "Pretender."
