4.0 out of 5 stars A must for all fans of the original New York punk scene.
Essentially an interview interspersed with some archival footage. I agree with previous reviewer Stacy D'Arc that there could've been more details and topics covered, which would've tied in nicely with his autobiographical book, LOBOTOMY. Nonetheless, there's much to enjoy for the Ramones fan and music historian. Steady talk about dope and references to his...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what Ramones' fans would expect
The Dee Dee in question is, of course, Dee Dee Ramone: Writer of the best songs for the first and best punk band and the world's most loveable drug addict. I saw this one at the Tribeca Film Festival (With Marky Ramone sitting behind me...never took off his sunglasses!). I guess it's going to skip theatrical run and go right to dvd. The problem with this documentary is that it consists entirely of an interview conducted for another (as yet unreleased) documentary on Johnny Thunders. Upon Dee Dee's death the director decided to release it as a tribute. Consequently, very little is said by Dee Dee about his early life or life with the Ramones. Still it's an engaging snapshot of a reasonably clean Dee Dee, circa 1991,witty and wise in that sweet burned out way of his. Particularly adorable is his long conversation with his cat and his request for supplements from GNC in leiu of coffee since he's "Healthy Dee-Dee, now". For those of us who loved and miss Dee Dee, though, it's definitely worth checking out. Like spending an hour with an old irresponsible but much loved friend (without having to check if the silverware's missing when he leaves!).

One warning I would give is for Ramones fans. There's basically nothing on here about them. Occasionally Dee Dee will mention something in passing about Joey, Johnny, Marky or Tommy, but as the description mentions, these interviews were conducted for a Johnny Thunders documentary. He does mention bringing "Chinese Rocks" to Johnny Ramone & having it rejected cause it was about dope (which seems weird considering their other songs about nazis, child abuse, & huffing etc). Most of this dvd is dope stories involving members of the Heartbreakers (not Tom Petty's): copping, scoring, stealing from friends in the process, ad nauseum. The tattoo segments are interesting. At one point Dee Dee seems to say that it's an addiction like heroin. For me I kind of wish I hadn't seen him this way, but I guess now that he's dead it serves as a warning.

Steady talk about dope and references to his contemporaries/collaborators (Johnny Thunders, Stiv Bators). He mentions how Deborah Harry used to carry a horseshoe in her purse to fend off predatory men. I remember the audience, myself included, laughing out loud a lot when I caught this in a small East Village moviehouse the week of our mutual birthday (September 18). Sad to see you go, man. . .You and Joey are always in our hearts. Peace.

this is a great view of Dee Dees wit and humor and he is very honest and very upfront about his life and woes.I also read his book 'Surviving The Ramones ' i know all the Ramones and this is very cool to have. There is no music ( whole songs ) on this DVD but is well worth it for any Ramones fan. i sure miss Dee Dee..

3.0 out of 5 stars just a message about the film, April 22, 2006

the word is that lech did a thunders movie, born to lose, got music to the movie for 6 months and was hoping that some company would buy the movie and pay for the use of the music in the movie to use, since no film company did that lech was stuck with a movie about thunders with no permission to use the music in it, so he re-cut it and made a dee dee movie instead....

As many reviewers have stated, this is for Ramones Fans Only. If you are looking for stuff about the BAND, this ain't the place to look. If you are a Johnny Thunders fan, you will definitely wanna check this out.

Personally, I REALLY like Dee Dee and find him to be a very engaging, if sad, character. His place in music history is secure, but to see him near the end of his life, a wreck, and with little to show for his years as a legend, is sorta upsetting for your average Ramones fan to see. You should pick up his autobiog. to read a little bit more about Dee Dee the PERSON as opposed to the RAMONE.

He was a thoughtful and troubled man. Get this to learn more about HIM, not if you are looking for a Rockin' Good Time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Punk Rock Is Not for the Weak?, February 26, 2011
By
This review is from: Dee Dee Ramone - Hey Is Dee Dee Home (DVD)
"Hey is Dee Dee Home" is a sleeper hit for Ramones fans only. There are some brief snapshots of the Ramones in their heyday, rocking out at CBGB's (now defunct), some of their music... but other than that, it's a rambling interview with uber-stoner Dee Dee. It's a sad sight. Dee Dee was once wild&rambunctious with Johnny Thunders,Billy Idol,Sid Vicious&Richard Hell--now he's so mellow, he's not there (I'm Not There (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)) As a biopic, it's sadly disappointing. Dee Dee recounts living with Debbie Harry of Blondie - Greatest Hits, but most of the time, it's about scoring dope. The music gets a cameo role. We don't see his family, his friends. He's oddly isolated. Dee Dee was part of a beloved group;he passed away in 2002 (RIP, Dee Dee). This documentary is not merely that of a candle in the wind, but a candle that barely glimmers.

4.0 out of 5 stars For only True Ramones' fans, please..., January 14, 2005

This review is from: Dee Dee Ramone - Hey Is Dee Dee Home (DVD)
This movie is, like I said, for True Ramones' fans only. It doesn't contain Dee Dee's story of his whole life, mainly, just after he left the band in July 1989- until he did the interview in 1992. I did enjoy this a bit, because of the extra gig video that was included- Johnny Thunders's version of "Chinese Rocks"- whcih, sorry to say, doesn't compare to The Ramones' version. Anyways, Dee Dee goes over classic times; such as him, Johnny Thunders, and Jerry Nolan (N.Y.D.) trying to form the "Whores of Babylon" in Paris, to other memorable moments. I was on the computer while I watched this movie, so I only got a jist of it, but it was still good. But, it's going to be too hard to get for un-devoted fans of The Ramones or Dee Dee.

Gabba Gabba Hey!- "Have A Nice Day".
