Fellow gen-x pal of mine and I used to go see Barret Deems on Sunday nights live at the Elbo Room in Chicago between 1994-1997. He was 80+ years old and still as agile as ever on the skins. A real marvel. When I moved to San Diego in '97...my pal suprised me by sending this CD off Amazon...and let me tell you, it's fantasic. Very progressive modern, risque Buddy-Rich style jazz arrangements on this CD. Deems has backed the best of the best...Louis Armstrong, Frank Sintatra etc etc...but here he's center stage. If you dig drummer-led bands, dig this CD...it's kind of got a trippy, early to mid 70's feel to it. Barret proved you don't have to be young to be a hep-cat. Dig it.

I'm standing in the kitchen watching it rain, watching huge drops of water falling onto a picnic table full of what was a delightful dinner ... that is until the sky opened wide, the thunder cracked, and we all ran for cover. But standing here listening to Barrett Deems swing with an elegance I've seldom heard before, I suddenly get it, it all makes sense, these huge drops of water are dancing across the plates with a syncopated rhythm that's as fresh and cool as the air that's dropped in temperature. Chuck Hedges swings on his clarinet like he's caught a shooting star by the tail, Don DeMichael sparks like a match on the vibes, while Steve Behr's piano rolls with ragtime precision, and John Defauw introduces guitar jazz that will melt butter on a biscuit.

So while everyone else is in the living room engaged in one thing or another, I've stepped back on the deck, sat myself down, propped up my feet, and am sitting here bopping for all my life, soaking wet, drenched to the bone, smiling with the excellence that's swirling through my ears, mixing with the weather, and taking me on one of the most adventurous jive jazz outings I've had in a very very long time.

Leave it to Delmark Records, where if they don't have it, you don't need it, to bring you another groovy piece of wax from a rapid fire drummer of whom Louis Armstrong said, "Deems makes coffee nervous." This bit of sublime energy was originally laid down on the 22nd of April, 1978, and though not widely distributed, it sold out within a year ... leaving anyone with a vinyl copy, with a true treasure.

If you don't know who Barrett Deems was (unfortunately, he's passed), check out Louis Armstrong's recordings from the 50's, and the movie High Society. I heard him in his 80's. He was still going strong until the end.
