Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Fans of Food Network personality Paula Deen are well acquainted with her sons Jamie and Bobby through her program, as well as their own culinary travel show, "Road Tasted." This companion piece to the series recounts their visits to mom-and-pop establishments across the country, alongside the Deens' own take on featured establishments' signature dishes. Readers need not be familiar with the program to find the book useful, as the brothers offer a selection of dishes ranging from regional specialties such as Lobster Rolls and Brats to Truffles and Rosemary Lamb Chops. Some recipes, such as a basic cole slaw, require little preparation, and more involved recipes like Crab Corn Cakes with Basil-Jalapeno Sauce are still relatively easy to prepare. The book's focus on specific locales and their dishes elevates it a step above most of its type; instead of offering a basic recipe for grits, for example, the Deens offer a twist: two ounces of goat cheese. Traditional thumbprint cookies benefit from ground pecans incorporated into dough which is then rolled in chopped pecans; and corn bread is greatly enhanced by the chopped bacon and sautéed apples folded into the batter. These memorable touches guarantee that this cookbook quickly becomes dog-eared from regular use.

About the Author

The stars of the new prime time Food Network show Road Tasted, Jamie and Bobby Deen know great regional food inside and out-and their much-anticipated first cookbook delivers just what their fans are hungry for: the best recipes inspired by their tastiest discoveries on the road and personal stories of the people who make and serve some of the fabulous foods they encountered on their journey. Born in Georgia, Jamie and Bobby are the sons of famous Food Network host and best-selling cookbook author Paula Deen. The boys got their start in the food business back in 1989 when their mom hired them to deliver sandwiches. The three Deens joined forces to open a restaurant in Savannah, The Lady and Sons, which led to Paula's cookbook series and popular Food Network show. These two good-old-boy charmers are frequent guests on Paula's Home Cooking and beloved by Food Network audiences. Writer Melissa Clark from Brooklyn has spent her entire professional life associated with food. Her work appears in The New York Times, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure, and Real Simple. She has also collaborated on 17 cookbooks, one of which received both a James Beard award and the Julia Child Cookbook award in 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will You Go On The Road Again?!? I want more!!!, April 6, 2007
By

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: The Deen Bros. Cookbook (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I love Paula Deen - I wanted to add it to my collection of 'Deen' books!!! I assumed it would just be OK - you know, sons on the coat tails of their mama's fame - well - was I ever wrong!!!

Paula should be VERY proud of her boys - they have done a fine job on their own!!!

To start off - this book is beautiful - picture perfect - or should I say perfect pictures!!! A nice mixture of food photos - and travel log kind-of-stuff - which makes it fun for the family to page through while I'm experimenting in the kitchen with some of the recipes!!!

And their recipe selection - one recipe is more mouthwatering than the next!!! You're tempted to pack your suitcase - and head over to any one of the down-home joints featured in the pages of this book to see what else they have to offer!!!

It really is a fantastic book - however you want to look at it - food - travel - it's all great!!! The only problem I see - which doesn't have to be a problem - is that they didn't get to all of the states - or even to every corner of every state that they did get to - so it leaves you wanting for more!!!

Simple solution - a follow-up book (and maybe more)!!! I just got this one - and I'm already waiting for the next - that has to say something!!! I'm crossing my fingers that they will see this review - and it will encourage them to continue on their travels!!! And if they ever make it to the Philadelphia area - I've got some hidden treasures of my own I could turn them on to!!!

Botton line - buy this book - you definitely won't be disappointed!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook to read and use!, June 14, 2007
By
This review is from: The Deen Bros. Cookbook (Hardcover)
I picked this book up thinking a lot of the recipes would be very Paula Deen - lots of butter, lots of cream, you know! Great lady, just a little heavy handed with the 'fats'. Anyway, this book has some great recipes inspired by their travels and the stories included are a fun read. If you like to read cookbooks (as well as use them) this is a book for you. The recipes are fairly simple to complete and the directions are very clear. Ingredients used are easy to come by and substitutions are suggested at times. The recipes range from party fair, bbq, comfort food and yummy desserts. There's also some terrific photos of about 1/3 of their recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've only gotten through the South!!, April 9, 2007
This review is from: The Deen Bros. Cookbook (Hardcover)
I just got my copy - I barely got through the South and I am going to make every recipe!

The pictures are fantastic - the recipes look easy and delicious - and I can't wait to cook myself through the States with the Deen Brothers.

Next book - the Deen Brothers do Europe???

Buy this - you won't be disappointed.
