4.0 out of 5 stars more great action from Desk Three
If you like the previous Deep Black books, you'll enjoy this one. They throw a pretty major curve early in the book that was totally unexpected, but some of my favorite books have surprises that remind me that life isn't about the status quo continuing forever. I wish they'd covered that piece of the plot a little more later in the book, but it seems that it was just...

New co-author, who obviously didn't read the previous books. No mention of key events and several supporting characters are missing. WAY too much preaching on global warming. I'm less than halfway through and it's debatable whether I'll bother to finish. I really enjoyed the previous Deep Black books, but I doubt I'll bother with another. This is a real loser!

1.0 out of 5 stars NEVER Again, March 3, 2009

Never again will I buy a book "co-authored" by someone I like to read. This example demonstrates extreme laziness and deception on Coonts' part: the book is terrible and in all likihood Connts didn't even READ it, let alone write any of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst of the Series, February 24, 2010

I have recently read the other books in the Deep Black series and found this one to be more disjointed. I also found the "green - Global Warming" angle a little too preaching. Especially with new information about the actual validity of Global warming - this book may become dated very quickly.

Was not up the the standards of the previous books in the series .

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely out of sync with the series. I had to put it down after 100 pages., June 17, 2010
I like to read series of books from an author, as I like the continuity of characters. I stuck with Patterson although he sometimes has weird co-authors who mess up the development of a favorite character.

This one, however, was just too much even for a fan.

No more Deep Black for me. I refuse to even finish this book which I have been looking forward to. The changing between different scenes does not work well, and killing off a main character was a bad, and unfortunately irreversible choice.

The "scientific" arguments about Global Warming made me cringe - so badly were they phrased, irrespective of their credibility.

Maybe one of these days Coonts will pickup "his" book and read the first few pages. I hope he will learn from his mistake and dave his other characters from further damage.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his previous books, March 23, 2011

I have read and enjoyed all of the Deep Black' books.

In my opinion, Artic Gold does not match the standards set by the previous books in this series.

It seems a bit disjointed, and just doesn't have the same feel. Could this be due to the new co-author?

Additionally, it doesn't seem that he did much research into the actual science of global warming before making it an issue in the book.

I wish they'd covered that piece of the plot a little more later in the book, but it seems that it was just kind of forgotten. Anyway, I love the great action and the Russian mafia plotline. I definitely look forward to the next Deep Black book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, February 7, 2009

I can't believe they kill off one of my favorite characters early in the book. This series has been only so so to date (perhaps too much William Keith and not enough Stephen Coonts). The Dean character is just boring. I don't think I'll be buying the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deep Black: Arctic Gold, October 11, 2009
In the Arctic, two American intelligence operatives are kidnapped while investigating Russian submarines--a constant, covert presence beneath the ice caps. In Washington, ex-Marine Charlie Dean and his team at Desk Three trace the abduction back to the Russian mafiya, who have their sights set on the massive reserves of oil that lie thousands of feet below the ocean's floor.

While Dean is sent to the Arctic to rescue the hostages, the beautiful Lia Francesca penetrates a heavily guarded dacha on the shores of the Black Sea. Here she learns the explosive truth about Russia and its Arctic oil--one that could cost Dean and his Deep Black team their lives...and drive the world's superpowers to the brink of war.

MY THOUGHTS:

I really enjoyed the action, the premise was realistic, I loved his 'secret' government agency and loved the director of it. Wouldn't it be something if all this was possible?

His characters are well drawn and realistic and what I really liked is you see bad guys as more than cardboard figures, he gives some insight into them.

I hadn't read Steve's other Deep Black series, this was my first one. However this book stands alone just fine and he feeds you enough background as the story moves so you can fill in the blanks.

The book is well paced, good build up of tension, good conflict. It was a good read, I'd recommend it. In fact I'm already reading another Deep Black and will be looking at his other books to add to my library.

Good, good book as are all the "Deep Black" series. Unexpected plot twists kept me up well after bedtime. My only complaint is I can read them faster than Coonts can write them and each book leaves you wanting more.

Stephen Coonts has elevate the espionage genre even without a Cold War. His Deep Black series captures believable storylines with continuous character development. Charlie Dean may be getting a little old to climb rat lines but there's no replacement for brains!
