Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Spicy romance compensates for weak suspense in the third installment of bestseller Martin's Sinclair Sisters series (after Midnight Sun and Desert Heat). In the midst of investigating the condemnation of a city apartment building, Manhattan newspaper reporter Hope Sinclair gets pulled by her editor from that assignment and sent to Pleasure Island, near Jamaica, to chronicle the efforts of a treasure hunting team searching for priceless cargo from a Spanish ship that sank 400 years earlier. Near Pleasure Island, Hope boards the Conquest, the ship from which divers are conducting their search. Conner "Conn" Reese, treasure hunter and former Navy SEAL, is the primary player in the expedition. The close quarters of the Conquest serve to throw together Hope and Conn, two people jaded from previous disastrous relationships. Sexy romance sizzles between the pair in numerous love scenes. Unfortunately, the plot involving Conn's financial partner, who warns Hope away from continuing her research into the New York apartment house, is both predictable and underdeveloped, and the suspenseful action promised by the back cover copy never gets off the ground.

From Booklist
Journalist Hope Sinclair is pulled off a promising story about a conspiracy to buy out a retirement home that is standing in the way of a new development and dispatched to the Caribbean to write a series of stories about a treasure hunt involving a sunken Spanish galleon. Worried about Buddy, the elderly man who owned the retirement home, Hope hires a private investigator. Meanwhile, Hope finds herself intensely attracted to Conner Reese, the impressive leader of the treasure-hunting expedition, but she has vowed to steer clear of romance after a betrayal. He, too, is smitten but reluctant after a disastrous marriage to a gold digger destroyed his dream of building a tropical resort. Then, as bits of treasure are found, the danger level rises to a shoot-'em-up climax. The final book in Martin's trilogy about the Sinclair sisters is full of treasure-hunting information and, thanks to Hope's concern about Buddy, touching moments. Diana Tixier Herald

4.0 out of 5 stars The End Of The Sinclair Sisters Series!!!, May 2, 2005
Ms. Martin has brought to the conclusion her Sinclair Sisters trilogy, and "Deep Blue" was a very good ending to a series that offered the reader fun locations, strong and determined heroines, and the perfect Alpha male hero to complement them. This story was no different.

I took this read on the airplane with my flight just flew by (pun not intended, sorry) and I was fully engaged as I searched for buried treasure with Hope and Conner, while staying one step ahead of a killer.

Hope comes home to her apartment that has been torn apart by someone who seems to want to use this a warning to back off of the story that she was working. Her fears are confirmed when her boss pulls her off of one story, and moves her to another one. This one involves a treasure hunt, and Conner Reese. Conner is a diver who is in search of a lost Spanish galleon and it's hidden treasure. What he doesn't understand are the feelings he has for the sassy Hope. She's trouble with a capital "T" and he can't stay away. Will he be able to protect her from the danger that has followed her to the islands before a killer suceeds in ending Hope's life? Will Hope and Conner finally allow themselves to find love with each other?

This was a finally drawn story that truly had several different storylines going, but in the end they tied together. Hope was a great character and Conner was truly her equal. Ms. Martin always delivers when she pens her romantic suspense reads, and this story is no different. If you are new to this series, fear not...this is a strong stand alone read. On the other hand if you have been reading all of these books from the first than you won't want to miss this one. This is truly a read that you will want to add to your "summer reading list."

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice End To Trilogy,
By M. Garland (Columbia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although I enjoyed "Midnight Sun" and "Desert Heat" more, I think this is a nice wrap-up to the story of the Sinclair sisters.

The reason I didn't enjoy it so much was the fact that Hope wasn't the adventurer that her sisters were. Indeed, even Hope admits that she's a coward. For me, her struggle against men/marriage/Conner went on far too long. So her engagement ended in disaster. She should have thanked her lucky stars she found out what a slime the guy was before the wedding. Instead, she keeps comparing our hero to Richard, the slime. No way. She leaps to far too many conclusions and has a hard time backing off of them. In the beginning, Conn forms a conclusion about her but wastes no time in revising that when he gets to know her a bit better. I do like how she stood up for the old people, how good she was with the boat crew and that she kept on task with her writing. I just felt her angst was a tad overdone. I believe the miscarriage could have been handled a bit differently but, I guess, Ms. Martin needed that to be an essential part of her story.

On the other hand, I adored Conner. Great hero. And the hunt for the Spanish galleon was exciting. I enjoyed that a lot. I don't know that I would ever be brave enough to scuba dive but I enjoy reading about it.

I've read Ms. Martin for years now and really have enjoyed her whole body of work. Some more than others, of course. May she and her word processor continue to turn out good stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A suspense thriller with a lighter side!, May 17, 2005
By Valerie Matteson "Bookaholic" (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have read some Kat Martin before but not the other Sinclair sisters books. She is a fine writer that combines romance, suspense and some fun. This is the story of the oldest and more cautious in relationships Sinclair sister, Hope. Hope is a Midday News reporter in Manhattan and has been on the warpath since Hartley House, a retirement apartment building, was unjustly condemned. The story opens with the police in Hope's apartment as a neighbor called them. Her apartment has been trashed!! Searched, furniture destroyed, etc. Hope's best friend, Jackie, comes to help her put it to rights. Hope knows she is on the right trail. However, her boss pulls her off the story and sends her on a magazine assignment to the Carribean island, Pleasure Island. There an expedition is trying to find a lost Spanish galleon. The main partners, Brad Talbot, a rich tycoon, and Conner Reese, an ex-SEAL, are working with an archaeology professor to try to determine where the ship went down. Reese is in charge of operations and security and is quite angry when Hope arrives. Publicity is the last thing he wants as he knows tourists and every Tom, Dick & Harry will surround the search area and make it nearly impossible and certainly highly unlikely that the finds and archeological objects will be preserved.

Trouble ensues right off the bat and while Conner and Hope fight and give in to their mutual physical attraction, the danger to Hope grows. For me, finding out the connection between the stories and characters and the way Hope persists until OTHERS are in danger was a joy to read.

The only thing that bugged me in the book was Hope's inability to make the final commitment!! She is definitely more indecisive than her sisters and let past issues interfere a little too much.

Altogether an enjoyable and suspenseful read!!
