Editorial Reviews

Australia's biggest hardcore-metal band Parkway Drive have delivered the long-awaited follow-up to 2007's hard-hitting breakout album Horizons just in time to unleash the new tracks as they storm the Warped Tour all summer. Determined to surpass previous efforts, Parkway Drive have gone all out in creating a complete listening experience. While maintaining the band's trademark sound at its core, Deep Blue weaves music, lyrics and artwork together into a dense concept that flows from beginning to end.

Biography

Byron Bay, Australia; situated on the far north coast of New South Wales, it's arguably one of this planet's most idyllic tourist destinations. A tranquil paradise of immaculate sandy beaches and lush tropical rainforest, it's full of surf retreats, hippie communes and backpacker hostels. Perhaps the most notable thing to come out of the place prior to 2003 were surfing champs and ... Read more in Amazon's Parkway Drive Store

I highly recommend this album if you like your music to have lots of breakdowns.

Overall; the quality of the music speaks for itself and I if you are a fan of the genre, Deep Blue is definitely an album you need to be listening to.

if you thought horizons was sick, this album has cancer, butt-aids, lupus and a congenital heart defect all at once. i'm not going to pick this album apart like the overabundance of aspiring critics that plague this site. listen to the demos, that's what they're there for...then buy it, you will not be repentant. ready your aural cavity for an all out assault!!!

PS - these guys are on warped tour 2010...show up, rock out, hug an emo (they hate it), and leave before andrew w.k. gets a chance to bleed on something

This is one of my most favorite albums. It provides nice heavy riffs and excellent vocals. The final breakdown in the song "Sleepwalker" is awesome.

The Good - This album is as brutal as Metalcore comes really. Every song has an exciting breakdown (a good and bad thing) and it never lets up from start to finish. The highlight is definitely the intro and the first two tracks. Especially Sleepwalker, it blew my mind. Over all, this is an absolutely amazing album that will have you pressing the repeat button on your ipod for time to come. Enjoy!

The Bad - I couldn't just leave this review with the good, because there are just too many problems with Parkway Drive's Deep Blue to ignore. If it were any other band it would have been an easy 5 stars, but these Metal heavy hitters don't get it that easy. The album, for me sounded like a saturated, bloated version of their old releases. It was all the brutality and not enough of the atmospheric, epic sound that we have all come to love. I like breakdowns as much as the next guy, but they have made it a very predictable formula for every single song that I thought was beginning to get overused in Horizons. The last problem, and the most noticeable is that the end of the album just sucks. After coming from Horizons' long and epic farewell, Deep Blue just abruptly stops as if the power was turned of in the studio.

Don't get me wrong, this album is pure enjoyment from start to finish, but so is the next lousy action movie that gets terrible ratings.

...One more thing for those of you that are new to Parkway Drive. The Ugly - If the F-word bothers you then reconsider buying this as it's in just about every song, but if your ok with that then buy this album. It's actually a great place to start with these guys. They seem to have gone slightly backwards in their career as I thought Killing With a Smile was their best album, but I think a lot of people would disagree with me there.

Deep Blue may not have been what everyone expected from Parkway Drive, but you cant rate it based on how you expect the band to progress. Deep Blue is awesome. I cant stop listening. This album still sounds like Parkway Drive, its just slowed down and really heavy at times. The guitar work is not as technical, which is unfortunate, but the riffs are still great. There are a lot of breakdowns, and the more I listen to the album, the more I like Parkway Drive's new sound. The vocals are amazing, and along with the lyrics, probably better than their previous records. I want to give this album 5 stars because its so good, but after releasing Killing With A Smile and Horizons, there's a lot to live up to and there is still room for improvement (I would have liked to hear some shredding or some really fast riffs). Parkway Drive didnt show all of their talent in this release, and even so, it just sounds amazing. Give it a listen, you'll know.

And probably eat their souls along with yours. This album is nuts. Other reviewers have gone into detail and said it better than I can, but I do have to say it's slower, heavier, and darker than their other albums. I agree with what others have said about production. I prefer the sound of Horizons and Killing with a Smile for these guys. Deep Blue is too bass-heavy and doesn't do enough justice to the guitars. If you have a sub in your car, this album will be an assault of bass drum with faint guitars and vocals you can't hear over the pounding. Not good in the car. (I have the same problem with all of Tool's albums.) In your home, it sounds amazing. Crank it up and scare the neighbors.

Now i'm going to go ahead and say this just like the other guy was saying. Me being a fan of Parkway Drive since their second album, I must say the production on this album was a let down compared to their previous two albums. It's just not as good sadly. The songs however, AMAZING as usual if not better then horizons. But seriously, these guys live are unbelievable (check out the dvd from horizons and you'll know why). Sleepwalker to me is not even near the best song on this album but it is still a good listen. I would buy it and in my opinion Parkway Drive is still the best band in this genre PERIOD. Congrats to this band, they did it again =]

When I first listened to this album I could immediately tell that the production on this cd was more raw and natural. Parkway Drive already have made two wonderful metalcore records and I never thought they would be able to top them. The truth is they came pretty damn close to making one of the most real sounding metal albums I have heard in a long time. I highly recommend this album if you like your music to have lots of breakdowns.
