More About the Author

Mary Kay Andrews is the author of the New York Times bestselling Savannah Breeze and Blue Christmas (HarperCollins), as well as Hissy Fit, Little Bitty Lies and Savannah Blues, all HarperPerennial.

A former reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she wrote ten critically acclaimed mysteries, including the Callahan Garrity mystery series, under her real name, Kathy Hogan Trocheck.

A native of St. Petersburg, Florida (and a diplomate of the Maas Bros. Department Store School of Charm), she started her professional journalism career in Savannah, Georgia, where she covered the real-life murder trials which were the basis of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

As a lifelong ""junker"" the author claims to know the location of every promising thrift store, flea market and junkpile in the southeastern United States, plus many parts of Ohio.

She has a B.A. in newspaper journalism from The University of Georgia (go Dawgs!), and is a frequent lecturer and writing teacher at workshops including Emory University, The University of Georgia's Harriet Austin Writer's Workshop, the Tennessee Mountain Writer's Workshop and the Antioch Writer's Workshop. Her mysteries have been nominated for the Edgar, Anthony, Agatha and Macavity Awards.

Married for more than 31 years to her high school sweetheart, Tom, she is the mother of 24-year-old Katie Abel and 20-year-old Andrew. After a three-year hiatus in Raleigh, NC, she and her husband recently moved back to their old neighborhood in Atlanta, where they live in a restored 1926 Craftsman bungalow.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Deep Enough, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Deep Dish LP (Paperback)
I pre-ordered this book because I've read all of Mary Kay's other books and was anxiously waiting for the next one. What a disappointment. "Hissy Fit" was truly her best book - and this is the opposite. Uninteresting main characters, very predictable, annoying secondary characters - along with some "hard to swallow" situations that just didn't seem realistic (pun intended).

One of the downsides of Ms. Andrew's writing is that she doesn't seem to develop her characters well enough, especially in appearance and background (for example, why was Tate doing a cooking show? What did he do before that?). I have not ever been able to get a really good visual image of what they look like - how tall, body type, hair color, age - the overall physical person. I realize that those things are mentioned in bits and pieces in her books, but many writers give you a very specific and detailed description of the people they are writing about, almost at the very beginning of their book, so that you can picture them in your mind when reading about them. I have no idea what the characters in Deep Dish look like - only that the guys are hunks and the women are all pretty. The same holds true for some of her other books, but it was especially irritating in this one. All in all, I'm quite disappointed in the book and really wish I had not spent the $$ to get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so deep characters, March 9, 2008
This review is from: Deep Dish LP (Paperback)
I love Mary Kay Andrews books. I have read all of them. I was so glad to see a new one and on a topic I am intereseted in. I learned a lot about The Cooking Channel and TV but the characters were not so great, a little petulant, spoiled, petty and really unsympathetic. Enough already with the f word, too. None of my friends talk like that, at least in public. I had to skip over pages of characters arguing and really, that is not interesting reading. I'm not sure why everyone was always sort of snippy or short tempered and difficult. It gets better in the middle and I enjoyed the book but it's not as memorable as others she has written. But as a fan I still am waiting anxiously for her next book!
