5.0 out of 5 stars Hysteria in the Kitchen
The above reviewer nailed the plot, so I won't go into that. Gina is someone a lot of women can relate to (bad hair day, Martian men), and Tate is the ultimate good ol' boy who really does ooze charm AND can cook well. I should preface this by saying that I adore Mary Kay Andrews/ Kathy Hogan Trocheck (same author writing under two different names). Normally I find her books really entertaining, and they're among my favorites, so I pre-ordered this one.

The above reviewer nailed the plot, so I won't go into that. Gina is someone a lot of women can relate to (bad hair day, Martian men), and Tate is the ultimate good ol' boy who really does ooze charm AND can cook well. Their bantering sparkles like champagne, but these two are totally authentic Southerners, including Gina's family. YES, her mama does call about every day, and you can still find her type in every small Georgia town. As a lagniappe, there are three (fairly simple) recipes at the end - what do you expect from a story about two people fighting to get on The Cooking Channel.
Those who love Dorothea Frank and Anne Siddons will flat-out love this one. Mary Kay Andrews just has Frank's knack for capturing the rhythm of the South and spinning it into a laugh-aloud, recognize- yourself tale. She's about as addictive as Co'cola and Moonpies:)

I should preface this by saying that I adore Mary Kay Andrews/ Kathy Hogan Trocheck (same author writing under two different names). Normally I find her books really entertaining, and they're among my favorites, so I pre-ordered this one.

Unfortunately, the cast of characters just left me flat in this one. The usual zippy dialogue and entertaining scenarios never materialized. Maybe if it had been from another author I didn't like so much this wouldn't have mattered, but I have such high expectations for her books that I found this one a big disappointment. It's definitely not on a par with her Savannah books or Hissy Fit. Get this one from the library, and save your pennies for the next Mary Kay!

I too am a fan of Mary Kay Andrews, I too pre-ordered Deep Dish... I couldn't even finish the book, it was that boring. I gave it to a friend (who also loves Ms. Andrews' books) and she couldn't get through it either.
At first I thought well, maybe I'm just disappointed because these are new characters but no, it was just a boring book.
Before you buy this book, read excerpts, it is NOT Ms. Andrews usual fare.

4.0 out of 5 stars A true fan and MKA Apologist speaks, June 15, 2008

Let me begin this review by saying that I enjoy Mary Kay Andrews immensely. I can always count on her to deliver a fun read that far exceeds the standards of the romance novel genre. In fact, she doesn't write romance novels, so if you're looking for the bodice ripper then proceed elsewhere. What she does write is an entertaining book; one that is amusing and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. That being said, Deep Dish is not her funniest book. Nor is it her best. It is a good book and will be enjoyed by her fans, especially if they are foodies.

The food aspect plays big in this novel and a working knowledge of a kitchen and The Food Network will help in enjoying the novel. I caught a few little editing errors; the aforementioned blond hair/black hair issue with the character Scott and a brief reference to early spring weather in Atlanta when earlier in the chapter it was a hot, steamy July day. Those however are editing issues and shouldn't be held against the author.

If you are looking for a quick summer read, something for the beach or the pool, then this is a good choice. In the world of chick-lit Mary Kay routinely hits home runs. Even though this one is only a triple, it still deserves a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars too much food, not enough romance, May 26, 2008

Love you MKA, but this book just wasn't one of your best. I kept waiting...and waiting...and waiting...for the romance to kick in between Gina and Tate. When it finally did, it was "too little too late." I got got bogged down with all of the food/cooking stuff and just wanted the story to be over with; I began skipping pages to get to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Cute, May 19, 2008

I LOVE Mary Kay Andrews's books, but I have to admit this one took me a little longer to really get into. Maybe it's because I'm not too into cooking, but it seemed to start out a little slow.

The story is about two Georgia locals who have they're own version of a local cooking show. There is an opportunity of a huge cooking channel show and one of the two will be rewarded it. In order to choose between the two, the network sets up a "food fight" three show edition. They take the two to a Georgia Island and let them duke it out culinary style. Once they get to the island, the story really picks up and it becomes really cute and entertaining. I was definitely not disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mary Kay delivers again, March 2, 2008
By
This review is from: Deep Dish (Hardcover)
I had the pleasure of hearing Mary Kay (Kathy) on her Deep Dish book tour yesterday at Buckhead's Barnes and Noble and her characters didn't fall far from her real life tree. Regina, the 30ish home ec Georgia grad from Odum, GA, has her life fall apart when the PBS cooking show she's on is suddenly cancelled when it loses it's major sponsor. It turns out the loss of said sponsor is not because they suddenly decided to advertise on the NASCAR circuit but because the sponsor's wife was found out with Regina's producer/boyfriend at the Buckhead Ritz Carlton. Things go from bad to worse when she suddenly finds herself in a cooking challenge with another "Southern" cook who tapes at the same studio, Tate Moody, for a slot on The Cooking Channel as their Southern cook. Tate is easy on the eyes but inevitably says the wrong thing to Regina and pushes all her buttons.

Throw in Regina's younger sister Lisa who never met a dance club she didn't like, a dog named Moonpie, an archtype nicotine addicted NY producer and several media types and Mary Kay pokes fun at all of them. The dialouge is smart, witty and self-deprecating, the "Southernisms" smack on and you get a bit of decorator porn as well. Just as you would expect from someone who mines their experiences as a Georgia reporter of several decades and observer of her female friends. A good read.

1.0 out of 5 stars so disappointed, Mary, November 17, 2009
This review is from: Deep Dish: A Novel (Paperback)
I thoughly enjoyed every other book by this author, UNFORTUNATLY this book FALLS SHORT of her usual character development, witty dialogue, fun loving, charming and mysterious writing style. I was even put off by the poor language in the book. I had to force myself to read this book. I bought this book for myself and another for my mother in hardback when the book first came out. I was embarassed that I had given this book to my mother. I will say that I have since enjoyed reading her last book. If you love most of Mary Kay Andrews book...this one might be one to skip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, May 14, 2008
This review is from: Deep Dish (Hardcover)
This is the first book by Mary Kay Andrews I've read, and I enjoyed every page of it. It was a light, fun, easy read, which is something I've been having trouble finding. Usually I get bored really quickly and therefore read just a couple chapters before I give up on a book, but this one held my attention, and I found it difficult to put down. I'm in my ninth month of pregnancy, and have been feeling a little overwhelmed - this book gave me something to look forward to and was a nice escape from reality!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kept me interested, April 10, 2008
This review is from: Deep Dish (Hardcover)
I've read all of Mary Kay Andrews' books and this one was just as great as the others. The story kept flowing and the romance was what it always is in a Mary Kay book. It doesn't get real hot and steamy, but that is not how she writes. It's a thick book for her and I still read it in 3 days. Cute book. Take it to the beach!
