Not Deep Enough,
By Susan's Selections (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deep Dish LP (Paperback)
I pre-ordered this book because I've read all of Mary Kay's other books and was anxiously waiting for the next one. What a disappointment. "Hissy Fit" was truly her best book - and this is the opposite. Uninteresting main characters, very predictable, annoying secondary characters - along with some "hard to swallow" situations that just didn't seem realistic (pun intended).
One of the downsides of Ms. Andrew's writing is that she doesn't seem to develop her characters well enough, especially in appearance and background (for example, why was Tate doing a cooking show? What did he do before that?). I have not ever been able to get a really good visual image of what they look like - how tall, body type, hair color, age - the overall physical person. I realize that those things are mentioned in bits and pieces in her books, but many writers give you a very specific and detailed description of the people they are writing about, almost at the very beginning of their book, so that you can picture them in your mind when reading about them. I have no idea what the characters in Deep Dish look like - only that the guys are hunks and the women are all pretty. The same holds true for some of her other books, but it was especially irritating in this one. All in all, I'm quite disappointed in the book and really wish I had not spent the $$ to get it.

Not so deep characters,
By fan "ddemarin@mindspring.com" (Marietta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deep Dish LP (Paperback)
I love Mary Kay Andrews books. I have read all of them. I was so glad to see a new one and on a topic I am intereseted in. I learned a lot about The Cooking Channel and TV but the characters were not so great, a little petulant, spoiled, petty and really unsympathetic. Enough already with the f word, too. None of my friends talk like that, at least in public. I had to skip over pages of characters arguing and really, that is not interesting reading. I'm not sure why everyone was always sort of snippy or short tempered and difficult. It gets better in the middle and I enjoyed the book but it's not as memorable as others she has written. But as a fan I still am waiting anxiously for her next book!

Sorry, Andrews Fans...This One's a Miss,
By Cindy Gee "Love to Read Mysteries" (Durham, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews

I am a huge fan of this writer. She understands southern women, and eveything else southern. This book, however had an incredibly slow start. And I am not sure I can honestly say it was worth slogging through for the same old boy meets girl, boy finally gets girl ending. It wasn't near her best. You just don't much care about these characters. And Lisa does a complete character change from lazy, slobby lush to organizer of the world. Are we supposed to thing the love of a geek man did this? Too much angst. Ms. Andrews proved in earlier books that she knows the world of antiquing ...and she really made me interested in that and her realistic characters...and writes with such humor...I can't imagine what happened with this one! I'm still her fan for life, but just not so happy I pre-ordered this time.

Boring,

This book was really boring. It took me a long time to finish it, and the only reason I did was because I was hoping it would get better. The only thing I really liked about this book is that regina didnt give into Scott when she found out he cheated on her.It also took forever for Regina and Tate to even Kiss. I really didnt like this book at all.

I love Mary Kay's books. I found myself having a hard time starting this book because I loved Savannah Breeze and Savannah Blues so much that I didn't want to be disappointed with new characters. But as soon as I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Yes, some things were a little predictable, but I thought it was very entertaining and enjoyed it very much. Is it my favorite of her books, probably not. But, it's near the top of the list.

Like the other reviewers said, we love this author. Her Savannah series is wonderful. This book however . . . I wouldn't even think it was the same author it is so different than her previous work. I didn't even finish the book - and it was a book on tape. Let's hope this is a one time slip up.
