Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The third appearance of Morgan Hunt, following Blue Chipper , is a welcome addition to the burgeoning list of Florida-noir mysteries. Part - time PI Hunt, a semi-cynical shining knight, has already been compared to John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee, but his grittier past--Vietnam and a stretch in jail for murder--makes him tougher. When Phil Garvey, Hunt's pal from Navy SEAL days, needs help to rescue his marginal diving school on the Gulf coast, Hunt asks his friend, attorney Nat Semmes, to fend off a nasty lawyer. Garvey hints at finding a Spanish treasure off the Florida panhandle and then vanishes. Hunt finds Garvey's boat at the site of a sunken small plane. The plane crash was unreported and there's a modern treasure in the wreck, along with two bodies. He is soon battling a murderous S & L desperado and the nasty lawyer, neither of whom is above kidnapping a boy to recover "their" money. Badly outnumbered, Hunt beats the odds in a bloody finale. After a slow start, the pace picks up and doesn't falter. Notable in Norman's deftly depicted cast is the courtly, formidable Semmes, who wouldn't think of calling himself a "simple country lawyer."

From Library Journal

Norman stages the third Morgan Hunt adventure in a Florida Panhandle setting of attractive uniqueness. Hunt, an independent but humane and complex protagonist, finds legal redress for a harassed ex-navy diving buddy. The man then disappears, but not before telling Hunt of an exciting night-diving job and showing him a bar of silver allegedly salvaged from an old Spanish treasure ship. Running on instinct and wit, Hunt dodges federal agents, locates his friend's body, and tracks down the murderer. Descriptions of fishing, diving, and Hunt's laid-back lifestyle contribute to an exciting read. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Florida coast read, January 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep End (Paperback)
If you like the type of main character found in James Lee Burke novels (ex-Viet Nam, military, tough guy sort), I recommend this book. Good plot, pretty good character development and lots of mood found in the north coast of Florida environs. These guys that live in old mossy big mansions on the canals and waterways of Florida have got it made! They seem to have the money to spend plenty of time fishing and watching great flaming sunsets over the gulf... and they always have the time to help out a friend who is in trouble. It's what I would call a good "airport read"... You will probably have to search the used book stores for this one. His books are hard to find.

4.0 out of 5 stars No. 1 Travis McGee clone, January 6, 2008

This review is from: Deep End (Paperback)
It's unfortunate that when Geoffrey Norman wrote his four Morgan Hunt mysteries in the mid-90s, they didn't sell well enough to justify more in the series. If you like Travis McGee--John MacDonald's peerless 1964-1985 tough guy, philosopher and "salvage consultant," prototype for Spenser, Doc Ford and many others--the closest thing to him is Norman's Morgan Hunt. Fans of the first person, hard-boiled PI story, would do well to dig up copies of Norman's Sweetwater Ranch, Blue Chipper and Deep End. A fourth book in the series, Blue Light, seems unavailable in the US. You can get it through Amazon UK. Try out Morgan hunt, you won't regret it.
