5.0 out of 5 stars Avoiding Shallows
Lyrically brilliant and musically intense this album has all the elements of a great poetry reading that Jack Kerouac could never have imagined. "Water's Edge" tops the intesity chart for describing the sense of yearning. Other songs touch a full range of human emotions with such aphoristic statements as "A lie is the shortest distance between two...

I got a 7" from these fine folks back in the early 90's and I remeber it being pretty good. This though is'nt as good as it could be though. Indierock girl vocals kinda Velocity girl kinda jangle jangle. My wife digs this CD though, maybe i should give it another spin.

Lyrically brilliant and musically intense this album has all the elements of a great poetry reading that Jack Kerouac could never have imagined. "Water's Edge" tops the intesity chart for describing the sense of yearning. Other songs touch a full range of human emotions with such aphoristic statements as "A lie is the shortest distance between two faces..." or the poetic image" I am a candle in a vacuum / my face is stone / my lips are frozen." This is a great introduction to the band and incentive to seek out their later recordings. By the way, in reference to an earlier review, "the leader chic" does not have an attitude. Email them via their web site and you will get a friendly response.

4.0 out of 5 stars last stand from a great band, August 29, 2000

This review is from: Deep End (Audio CD)
Great scruffy, indie guitar-pop with righteously pealing two-part female harmony and songs that swell with bursts of anthemic melody, sometimes somber, sometimes frisky. Avoid all subsequent releases as they are knotty, overly clever, didactic and lacking in the charm of this record. It's a shame they would turn their back on this sound, as they admittedly did, because the direct melodicism here made for a more affecting record than their later art-brat phase. lead singer chic's got an attitude too
