5.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense Read., March 1, 2005
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
Jenna Hughes is a former movie actress who has moved to Oregan to raise her 2 daughters. After being harrassed by a fan in Hollywood, and the death of her sister Jill, on the set of her last movie, she leaves Hollywood and and her ex-husband to find peace and a settled life for her and her family.

Shane Carter is the local sheriff, he thinks Jenna is a hot-house flower trading on her fame. Even though he may not like her personally he can't help but notice her beauty. When threatening notes start to appear and women who look like Jenna start to disappear as well as one Jane Doe found dead, he has to get to know the lady. He immediately finds out Jenna is for real. A woman who loves her kids and just wants to find peace.

Both have secrets they want to forget, and both find that attraction can not always be locked behind closed doors. As more women disappear and the fear rises, so do emotions. The temperature is falling but in hearts and minds the terror rises.
It keeps you on your toes and guessing. Very well written I was totally surprised at the end. Very good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Read By One Of Today's Hottest Suspense Authors!!, February 28, 2005
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
This was a very chilling read by one of today's hottest suspense authors. She has not only penned a fine read that will grab the reader from the get go, she also manages to lay the ground work for the sequel as well.

This story takes place in rural Oregon where ex-Hollywood actress Jenna Hughes is trying to live a normal life with her two teenage daughters. Both girls are upset about being uprooted from friends and their father to live in the wilds of Oregon. Jenna is doing her best but life seems to be working against her. Feeling that something bad is about to happen Jenna starts receiving frightening notes at her home, and props that she has donated to the local theater have turned up missing. She thinks that this is just another case of a fan being a little to obsessed with her. She thinks she can handle it. She thinks wrong.

At the same time, temperatures are dropping and bodies are turning up dead on the mountain. They are being found with a strange substance on them, and when Sheriff Shane Carter starts really investigating it he is unaware in the beginning that his murders are connected to Jenna's mail. Soon he finds the connection but will he be able to catch the killer before he kills Jenna or her daughters? And more importantly is this someone that he has always known?

This was a strong and chilling suspense read. There are plenty of possible suspects and plenty of red herring thrown out to keep the reader on the edge of their seat until the killer is unveiled. This killer is without a doubt one of the scarcest characters I've read in awhile. The romance storyline is very mild so readers of the romance genre may be a little disappointed. Still Shane and Jenna were compelling characters and their attraction and interaction was an important part of this story. Groundwork has been laid for her next novel in this two part series. I highly recommend Ms. Jackson if you like edge of your seat reading with amazing characters that will keep you up late into the night reading.

JJC (Las Vegas, Nev) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
This is my first Jackson book and it felt just average to me. Nothing to recommend it. The characters were written well. The characters had depth but something was missing. The side romance between Shane and Jenna seemed forced and lacking in chemistry and romance. Heres the scoop on the book:

Shane is the sheriff of this Oregon town where dead woman are showing up where other woman of there close town are going missing.

Jenna is a ex-hollywood actress who has come to this small town to raise her two girls away from the limelight. Jenna is sexy, beautiful, great bod and every mans fantasy. We know this because the author describes her in every format this way. Her daughters Cassie and Allie were the least likeable characters in the book. Spoiled, whinning, rude girls!

Jenna starts recieving phone calls, problems with her home, her private things going missing and so on. So she inlists the help of the town sheriff - Shane. The first time they met they did not hit if off. (He gave her a ticket for a broken taillight) Just because he was in a bad mood and she is a ex-hollywood actress. But anyways through this story there are supposed to be atttracted to each other, I did not feel that way while reading this. I felt the author through this on the side and it was sorely lacking in romance.

Then there is the suspense. Where was it? I was waiting and waiting to find out who did it and why and then was let down. Oh in the end you know the name of the guy who has been doing the kinllings but not why. Nothing about him about his reasons, no insight whatsoever. Disappointing. He's obsessed with Jenna Hughes but why her? Well you never figure that out.

Then there is the flashback to Shane's life in the past that he cannot get over. His friend Davids death and his wife Carolyn. There was no real understanding there to why the author wrote that in the story. It felt thrown in but never understading why. His friend David died while climbing and he has never forgiven himself? And Jennas sister getting killed on the set of a movie. It was mentioned over and over but no details. Don't mention something over and over without explaining. Then when Jenna finds photos of Caroyln in Shanes pocket after they had sex, he never explains and she never asks him to, she says she does'nt want to know. What woman would'nt want to know? Then they have a little argument and then the end Boom! Thats it, yes there was a epilogue but I felt things not being wrapped up very well.

3.0 out of 5 stars solid suspense novel yet dissapointing ending, July 24, 2005
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
Lisa Jackson's Deep Freeze has the typical elements of a suspense novel with many scences that stun the reader and cause him to second guess his previous predictions. Despite this there was very little character development (although this is usually the case with fast-paced suspense novels) and no overall lasting impression. In the end, when the killer was announced I was thinking "Wait who is that?" If the killer was mentioned in the beginning of the novel he was long forgotten. The thrill would have been a lot better had the killer been a character we had known on at least a superfical level where the shock would have been "Oh it's him! I would have never guessed." Despite this, the process to discovering the killer was very suspenseful and compelling. Overall a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars It stays on your mind!, January 2, 2006
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
At first I thought this was an ok read, but it has been over four months since I read this book and my mind keeps coming back to the sheer horror of the storyline. So, instead of 3 stars, I need to give it 4.
This book is one of those psychologically intense thrillers that leaves you suspecting an assortment of people and trusting no one. The characters are not incredibly well developed, but the plot line definitely carries any lack of depth to the actual character development.
Retired movie star mom moves to an isolated place to offer normalacy to her growing children. When people who look coincidentally like her begin to show up dead, she needs to trust the local lawman who by all appearances isn't her greatest fan. She needs to trust her teenage daughter to support her in making sure they are all safe. Nothing is as it first seems.
This book is worth picking up. I understand the next book is going to be flaming hot, and I can't wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER FROM LISA JACKSON, April 21, 2005
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
Lisa jackson has written several very good thrillers that for me, and this is what I look for, read like a watching a good movie that are strongly plotted and character driven. She doesn't disappoint in her latest thriller Deep Freeze. People may be getting tired of the serial killer theme but if done effectively, I can read them all day long. Jackson is very effective at tossing out red herrings and detouring your thoughts on what's going to happen next. She also builds the tension througout quite well. i would strongly disagree with reviewer who said there were "too many characters". There's no such thing as too many characters if you have ones that are unique, lively, and skillfully handled as Lisa Jackson does.

The story concerns Actress jenna Hughes who decides to leave Hollywood once and for all. She's been stalked by an overzealous fan and her sister Jill was killed on the set of her last movie. She packs up her two daughters and moves to a remote ranch in Oregon to try and find some peace in her life. But the peace doesn't last long. her daughters are having trouble adjusting to the new setting and her teen is getting out of control, and then Jenna starts receiving disturbing letters which she thinks is from another obsessed fan. Meanwhile, women are turning up dead in the nearby region and Sheriff Carter begins to unravel a plot which has deadly implications for Jenna and her daughters.

This was a chilling and very suspenseful thriller. As mentioned, Jackson keeps you guessing as to the identity of the killer with plenty of suspects to choose from. The feeling of isloation for Jenna and her family is palpable, especially when a fierce winter storm moves in. This really is an edge of the seat thriller with strong characters and a deftly developed plot. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Shivers, August 8, 2005
By
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
I've not finished this book yet, but it is getting tiresome. Way too much detail and rehashing the same stuff and scenes over and over. Can't wait to find out who this nut is that can spend so much time following and watching everything Jenna does and no one catches him. And whats with all this camping out in the snow and blizzards he does in the nude no less.

This book could easily have been 200 pages shorter.
Next day: I've finished, but not satisfactorily. I think the whole dragged out 450+ book cramming the ending into the last 40+ pages was filled with immpossible scenarios. Everything worked out for the pervert, timing, running back and forth on accident and snow blocked roads and not hampered at all by power outages like everyone else in town.

Not going to rush out and get Fatal Burn to read more of the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lisa Jackson never disappoints, March 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)

Former actress Jenna Hughes has moved to a remote area of Oregon with her two teen daughters to escape the mess that Hollywood has made of her life. A failed marriage, an overzealous fan turned stalker, and the tragic death of her sister on a movie set made her long for a quiet, simple existence. Shane Carter is the sheriff of Fall's Crossing, Oregon. He is battling demons of his own and the very job that he loves so much is to blame. Jenna is struggling to maintain control of her sixteen year old daughter whose boyfriend has her sneaking out in the middle of the night and experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Her younger daughter hates school and is finding it hard to make friends.

When the remains of an unknown young woman are found in a wooded area outside of town, area residents are more curious than suspicious and aren't especially concerned. When local young women begin disappearing, and movie memorabilia that Jenna has donated to the local theater starts to disappear, the sheriff realizes that the situation is much worse than anyone had imagined. Shane Carter finds himself increasingly thinking about Jenna, but she is a beautiful woman and most of the men in town are fascinated by her. Jenna is equally attracted to Shane and feels a physical pull whenever she is in his presence. When Jenna discovers personal items missing from her home and chilling poetry left in her bedroom, they realize that they are dealing with something much more sinister than just a lovesick fan.

Ms. Jackson lets you believe that you know who this deranged madman is, for a while anyway, until the next twist when she sends you in a different direction, and another townsperson begins to appear suspect. By the end of the book you are helplessly on the edge of your seat, anxiously awaiting the fear that is sure to strike when you turn the page. She has done an excellent job writing the teen daughters. Their comments, expressions and emotions are right on the mark with those of any teenage girl, regardless of economic status or location. The romance in this book is sweet and the love scenes are very tastefully written, but not overly sensual.

I give this book my very highest recommendation; you most definately should get your hands on a copy. I am already anticipating Lisa Jackson's next release.

5.0 out of 5 stars ICY COLD SUSPENSE, March 25, 2005
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
THIS BOOK IS SO LONG THAT ALTHOUGH I LOVE THIS AUTHOR I PUT OFF STARTING IT. IT WAS SO WELL WRITTEN THAT I HATED TO SEE IT END AFTER ONLY 500 PAGES. THERE ARE VERY FEW BOOKS THAT I WOULD SAY THAT ABOUT. THE CHARACTERS ARE WELL DEVELOPED AND THE TENSION JUST KEEPS ON CLIMBING. ONCE I WAS INTO THE BOOK I REALLY RESENTED HAVING TO PUT IT DOWN. I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE IN THIS SERIES.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jackson is queen of the serial killer novel!, May 2, 2006
By
This review is from: Deep Freeze (Paperback)
Former movie queen Jenna Hughes moves to an isolated home in a sleepy Oregon town with her children to escape the LA grind. She lost her sister on the set of her last movie, and left her philandering producer husband behind. Her tranquility is soon interrupted when an obsessive fan starts stalking women in the area, "molding" them into Jenna's likeness based on her most famous roles in order to create the perfect woman. Add to that her disintegrating relationship with her teen daughter who is experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

Sheriff Shane Carter thinks that Jenna is just another spoiled actress. When a partially decomposed body pops up in a wooded area, people are just curious. Then local women with a passing resemblance to Jenna are starting to disappear, as is memorabilia that Jenna has donated from her movies to the local theater. When she discovers trinkets missing from her home and poetry left behind in her bedroom foreshadowing her fate, Shane realizes that they are dealing with more than just a deranged fan. The only question is who? And will he be able to solve the crime spree before another women goes missing?

Jackson weaves a chilling and suspense-filled story that is sure to terrify you. As she tosses out one suspect after another, the reader will be convinced they know the identity of the madman, only to change her mind again and again. She is the queen of the red herring and the serial killer novel (if there is such a thing), and this one while at times graphically violent, will keep the reader's attention until the bitter end.
