A well-written book about personal struggle and loss,
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep in the Heart (Paperback)
I am a Civil War buff, but I will be the first to admit I don't know every detail about every battle, so I can't account for the accuracy. At first I had a hard time accepting Floyd's writing style. He seemed to write in an almost remedial way and jumped around a lot. Over time, however, I grew to like the style for this particular book. I wanted to know how every character felt at every moment and Floyd lets you know. Overall, I liked it better than I thought I would. If you tire of reading the nonfiction battle accounts, this is a nice change of pace, still capturing the essense of the war.

I heard this author interviewed on Georgia Public Radio and was excited to hear about the book, because my great-great grandfather was in the same Company A of Georgia's 49th Regiment as was the book's main character. What a let-down. I have never been so disappointed in a book. I thought it was very poorly written. Amateurish even. I could not even finish the book, because I was so disappointed at how poorly it was done. There was no sense of setting or characterization, or feeling for the characters. They felt like cardboard cut-outs. "Cold Mountain," this ain't.

Painful History,
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep in the Heart (Paperback)
Deep in the Heart opened my eyes to the war in a way I never thought imaginable. As a citizen of Germany, I always thought what I read about the American Civil War was phoney--too much Hollywood! Herr Floyd's tale touched me deeply as an honest portrayal of the people and events of that period. A word to Hollywood: Keep Scarlett O'Hara and Tara plantation--give me more people like Martha Ann NeSmith and Wilkinson County, Georgia!

A slight disappointment,

After reading the wonderful Cold Mountain, this book was a little disappointing. I expected the sweeping grandeur of that novel, and ended up with a sweet little romantic story with characters that I never really felt emotion for at all.

A must-read book for all Civil War enthusiasts!,

This book captures the heart of the "old South" as few books have done since Gone With the Wind. But this book is about real people and real emotions, not phoney "magnolia and moonlight" aristocracy. It's a great war story, and an even greater war story.

Despite the title, a rather shallow story.,

After reading The Black Flower, this book definitely ended up being a disappointment. The characters don't have much much depth, and the book may contain some historical inacuracy. Two Georgia teenagers are discussing the fame of "General" Sheridan during the summer of 1862. Colonel Sheridan's promotion to brigadier general did not happen until September 13, 1862 (although it was then effective back to July 1, 1862). Maybe the kids were psychic? There is also a reference to an inscription on a silver cross belonging to a dead child that is dated 1948. Back to the future once again. Seems to me this book was rushed to press to capitalize on the success of books like Cold Mountain. At $24.95 for a paperback, the price is too steep for the contents. Is it a good book? Maybe. Is it a great book? No way. Save your money and check it out of the library.

Realistic...enjoyable,

I just finished Deep in the Heart, which I enjoyed very much. I found it very realistic as to the horrors of war, both as to the military and civilians. Perhaps i will get a chance to read more of E. Randall Floyd's work in the future.

Just finished this book--excellent! E. Randall Floyd is a new author to me, and I plan to read his others. I am a history buff, esp. the "Late Unpleasantness," and I sat up half of the night to finish the book. Keep up the good work; I'll anticipate Mr. Floyd's future works!

insightfully written,
This review is from: Deep in the Heart (Paperback)
I'm mildly embarrassed to say I've just discovered E. Randall Floyd...and I'm sorry it's taken me so long. I just finished "Deep in the Heart." As a Civil War buff it was not only insightfully written (subject) but it made every occurrence and every character so very real. As an inveterate reader I also thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Floyd's way of writing. I'm not much into fan mail but did want Mr. Floyd to know that he made wiley & Garrett and Rev. Pierce and the rest of the characters so very believable by is style. Thanks.

Several of my friends had told me about this book. I picked up a copy in Birmingham, thinking I could read it on a week-long vacation. I was hooked the moment I opened the first page! Fast-moving, easy to read, but full of passion and emotion. The characters are so real, unlike the "moonlight and magnolia" stereotypes so often found in this genre. I enjoyed Mr. Floyd's book immensely, read it in two nights. More! More! More!
