What I Liked: I especially liked the dynamic between the hero and heroine. Despite the lack of character back story, I really enjoyed them both together and apart. They were endearing for me based on what I knew about them. I also really liked the female firefighters twist. That's just Win right there.

What I Didn't Like: It may seem cruel but, everything not mentioned above. I felt the dialog was contrived, the story boring and predictable. The editing was god-awful, I felt there was stuff integral to the story that was omitted for whatever reason, which made the story seem disjointed and random. Finally, while I got a HFN (happy for now), I really wanted the H/h to have a HEA.

Overall Impression: Some parts I enjoyed but ultimately fell flat. The beginning was difficult to trudge through, but the main characters were able to carry me on. While the middle picked up in both interest and pace, I think it was a case of too little, too late. I wanted to like this story more than I did, because I saw all the potential. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that potential was tapped to it's fullest extent. It's pretty much a "take it or leave it" type book. I'm not upset I read it (free and short), but it is very forgettable and for that reason, I personally can't recommend it.

I really enjoy kathryn Shay's work. This book, I felt was not her best-possibly because of the short length- but you can still get a taste for her writting. One thing I really like about her work is they are well researched and the side characters make the book richer. I am a bit surprised that her books dont draw the kind of attention she deserves.

Another thing I find a bit confusing is getting a listing of her books on amazon is so hard...she has three differnt accounts and none of them list all her works! I wish someone would take time to fix that.

This novella was a fun read and I really like the idea of doing a series on "America's Bravest" - more so, after learning that the author devoted several years worth of research to fine tune her resulting works. The one problem I had with this book is the first love scene. It was a little too unbelievable, situationally, for me to digest. My disappointment stemmed from the hero and heroine's lack of discipline in that first love scene as I like to think of America's bravest as beyond reproach - scions of that which is most admirable in our country, defenders of virtue, those willing to sacrifice their lives for the keeping of that which is good - they are better than the rest of us and therefore held to higher standard.

Romantic notions? Perhaps, but that's the beauty of fiction. Don't expect anything too earth-shattering, here, and you will be rewarded. This is a fun, quick read and the characters were very likeable. At this point, I'm not sure I'll spring for the rest of the series but I might down the road.

More About the Author

Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-five books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, one mainstream novel with Bold Strokes Books and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format. There are five million copies of her books in print. She has three never-before-published novellas, one firefighter anthology and seven full-length novels up on Kindle, Nook, SONY, iTunes, Kobo and Diesel.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing. (Her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT Book Reviews awards, four Golden Quills, four Holt Medallions, the Bookseller's Best Award, Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year and several "Starred Reviews."
