Book Description

The Undead were created to be soldiers. After the wars, they became common laborers.
Now they're avatars in a live-action computer game.

Welcome to GAMELAND, a forbidden wasteland in the middle of Long Island, where the rich and privileged act out their violent fantasies by pitting cybernetically-controlled zombies against one another.

Everyone's dying to play The Game. If you're lucky enough, you can buy your way in.
If you're desperate enough, you volunteer.
Jessica Daniels and her gang plan to hack their way in.

In a world drowning in contradictions, Jessie Daniels is struggling to make sense of it all. Her long-dead father is universally reviled for having invented Reanimation technology, yet the very monsters he helped create have become entrenched in a society increasingly dependent upon them. For security. For work. And now, for entertainment. As Jessica -- a computer gamer and hacker -- approaches her eighteenth birthday, all she wants is to put her family's dark past behind her.

She's about to crash headlong into it.

EPISODE 1: Deep Into The Game
A reckless, end-of-summer plan leads Jessie and her friends onto Long Island hoping simply to catch an unlikely glimpse of the infected victims of a decades-old outbreak. But if they think breaking in was easy, they'll soon discover that getting back out is a killer. Someone -- or something -- doesn't want them to leave. Not alive, anyway.

Five hackers. One game. Ten thousand Undead.

Deep Into the Game is the first book in the hi-tech dystopian thriller GAMELAND. Structured on television's The Walking Dead and Law and Order, the nearly 400,000-word series consists of eight individual episodes, first published monthly between May and December 2012. All are available digitally in single and multi-episode packages, as well as in an omnibus edition. Also available in print.

Not recommended for readers under age 15.

Deep Into the Game is the explosive beginning to a new cyberpunk mega-series, a zombie apocalypse unlike anything ever previously conceived. A mix of high tech, urban thriller and horror, here the mindless Undead aren't the only villains.

This eight-episode series was published monthly from May through December 2012 and focuses on the exploits of a small group of computer gamers and hackers as they navigate a world in which governments, corporations, the living and the dead collide.

This is suppose to be the first of an eight series book, so the end is just a hook to the next episode. Roberto Mattos  |  20 reviewers made a similar statement

5.0 out of 5 stars Shocked! June 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Okay, i'm hooked! I'm usually not the one to read too much out of my comfort zone, but i'm glad I did! Zombies and geeksquad gamers (as I call them), who would've thought! The darkness of it will have you on the edge of your seat, or in my case; sitting up in bed with my eyes glued to my kindle screen. Whenever I read a good book, I sit and wonder how the heck do the authors come up with such great storylines? I'm so glad i got the chance to read this and will be purchasing the other bundle as well. If you're into the walking dead thing this is the book for you! Heck if you aren't into it, then i suggest you get into it. The author doesn't disappoint. It's very well written and worth the read!!

If you like zombies and dystopian futures (like Hunger Games), you wil absolutely love this story. It is incredibly written with great character development. The story keeps you going all the time. 5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Take on Zombie Fiction July 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this first episode free and it did what free books are supposed to do -- got me hooked on both the story and the author. I will be buying the entire series now and also checking out other books the author has written.

I've turned into a zombie book fanatic over the past several months, and have been reading numerous books in this genre available in the Kindle store. Deep into the Game has a unique perspective -- written from the viewpoint of a gamer teenager -- that I found very refreshing. I still haven't decided if I like the episodic release format, as I hate waiting for anything and suspect that I'll be chomping at the bit waiting for the next installment, but I am definitely looking forward to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Swimming Zombies?! January 11, 2013
By Alex
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The author does a good job playing out the dynamics between Jake, Kelly and Jess and left me wondering what Jake and Kelly were up to. The tidbits of information about war, zombies and technology kept me guessing how the plot was going to play out. With twists and turns believable enough yet innovative made me think the rules of zombies can always be broken. I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I even enjoyed the author's comments at the start and end of the book which normally I skip. Keep writing great stories and I'll keep reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the usual zombie book January 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have only ever read one book about zombies before and sadly that book is still sitting on my book shelf half read as I have never found the energy to finish it. Therefore I wasn't sure what to expect from this book or this genre, even after reading the description. Anyway I decided to give the book a go and I'm glad I did.

Gameland falls outside the genres I usually like to read and zombies have never really interested me as all the books I've seen kind of sound the same. However Gameland seemed different from the usual post-apocalyptic-take-over-with-only-a-few-survivours-thing and this fact kept me hooked. I loved the idea of using hackers to try break into the game (although I'm still a bit unsure of the details of what it is and how it works) and the tough personalities and attitudes moved them away from the stereotypes which was a relief. The book was fast paced and had lots of action which I loved but in some parts I would have liked a little more description to help me visualise the surroundings better.

There are a few minor downsides to the book which come in the form of some editing errors/typos but these are few and do not detract from the story. Also Tanpepper uses quite a few abbreviations and I found it hard to remember what each one stood for (as the words where usually quite technical), therefore it interrupted the flow of reading as I either had to flick back a few pages to find the full length name or stop and try to remember, which was quite irritating at times. I know sci-fi books include technical and complex language, especially when referring to new gadgets, but for me I would rather have the full words than abbreviations. I can cope with ones like IU (infected undead) but when longer ones are used frequently I find it hard to follow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun January 6, 2013
By dk
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A cool "coming of age story" (maybe?) geared more towards teens but enjoyable for all ages. It was a fun read, and the book ends with loose ends...there's obviously a lot more going on behind the scenes here but presumably you won't find out till book 2 (I haven't read it ).

More About the Author

Saul writes in several speculative fiction genres, including horror, cyberpunk, biopunk, and straight science fiction. A former Army medic and trauma specialist, he earned a PhD in molecular biology and genetics; his works are heavily informed by these past experiences.

Saul spent his formative years in a century-old house overlooking the Erie Canal in Upstate New York. He shared an attic room with all manner of creatures, not all, he is convinced, flesh and blood.

After several years spent overseas and working his way to executive positions in biotech, he returned to his true passion of storytelling.

He now writes full time from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area. He continues to be haunted by a variety of creatures, including a wife, kids, three dogs, three cats, twenty chickens, a wayward rooster, and one very grumpy possum. They are all flesh and blood.

Except for the possum, which he's sure is the reincarnated spirit of Jack Torrance.
