Great read for those interested in African-American History,
This review is from: Deep Like the Rivers (Paperback)
I absolutely loved this book. I've had pleasure of hearing the author discuss this work. Although written from achival data, these narratives are compelling and "alive". I was drawn to the individuals, their stories, their challenges and triumphs. The slaves' experiences are presented psychologically, sociologically and antropologically. A must read!

Deep Like the Rivers,
This review is from: Deep Like the Rivers: Education in the Slave Quarter Community, 1831-1865 (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding book. Webber allows enslaved Africans to speak for themselves by citing Fisk University's study done from interviews with ex-enslvaed Africans. He demonstrates that enslaved Africans were able to maintain cultural continuity and a compelling quest for education despite the devastating effects of their enslavement.
