Review

“Deep Living is profound transformational inner directed therapy...”
-- NANCY LORRAINE, Senior Reviewer, The Midwest Book Review

“This is a book that makes possible deeper intimacy with yourself, by bringing together the practical and the profound.  Deep Living offers many pathways for the active practice of presence in the exploration of what it means to be fully human.  Using the Enneagram to radically and compassionately shift the reader’s understanding of him or herself, Roxanne Howe-Murphy offers wise guidance to an inside-out process that teaches readers how to refocus their attention and build upon their innate capacity for living with more joy, aliveness, and fulfillment.  We recommend this book as an important source of spiritual guidance to support and accelerate your own awakening.”
--DON RICHARD RISO AND RUSS HUDSON, Authors, The Wisdom of the Enneagram and Personality Types
“The malaise of our time is shallow-mindedness, superficiality and abbreviated awareness.  Deep Living by Dr. Roxanne Howe-Murphy offers a compelling antidote.”
--MICHAEL J. GELB, Author, How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci

“Deep Living does, indeed, transform your relationship to everything that matters, starting with that most important relationship – the one between you and YOU.  Read this book to understand yourself more fully and appreciate yourself more deeply.  Read it to move beyond your current, outworn, habitual patterns to the freshness of being authentically present in the moment. Read it to better understand the other relationships in your life.  Read this book.  You’ll be so glad you did!”
--MARCIA CANNON, PhD, MFT, Author, The Gift of Anger

“SHE is a modern mystic!!!!  Roxanne Howe-Murphy captures the deepest beat of life and translates it for the ears, eyes and hearts of all who claim readiness to what life can be about.  To live deeply may not be for the faint of heart, but there is much Light and Liberation in the pilgrimage to our very essence.  The Enneagram, as Roxanne sees it and utilizes it, is a sacred path, an expedition in love of Self and of others. To know one's inherent nature is to be realized and truly free.”
--HARRIETT SIMON SALINGER, MCC, LCSW, Executive and Personal Coach, Spiritual Director and Certified Seeker

“If you are ready to witness yourself with both eyes wide open, to understand why you act the way you do (even when it is ineffective), and to learn how to live in alignment with your true essence, this is the book for which you have been waiting.   Roxanne shares her wisdom, compassion and deep coaching expertise, leaving you with the gift of deep living.  A must read for anyone ready to begin or continue their personal life journey!” --SUZANNE GLAZER, Assistant Director, Executive Coaching, Leadership Initiative, Harvard Business School

“Soul excavation is hard work - but the Enneagram is a powerful tool and Roxanne Howe-Murphy a very able guide to this process. For spiritual directors—or anyone who is ready to pay attention to the call of authenticity in their lives, and allow themselves to be truly present—Deep Living provides a map to interior freedom and more genuine relationships with God, Self and others. This book challenges the reader to move to new levels of self awareness and healing, providing concrete steps and real help for true transformation.”
--SUZANNE BUCKLEY, Director, Mercy Center, Editor, Sacred Is the Call—The Transformational Work of Spiritual Direction Programs for Personal and Professional Growth

“In Deep Living, Roxanne Howe-Murphy combines her wisdom and experience as a coach with the profound wisdom of the Enneagram. She lays down a multi-perspective frame for each of the nine personality types, enabling us to see ourselves through many lenses—from our most disabling patterns to our greatest gifts. She also provides accessible, type-specific practices that support movement out of those patterns and into a more integrated way of being. Those who truly take this work to heart, however, learn to create the conditions for an inner shift that can peel away the need for self-limiting personal stories and judgments and open to a life lived with greater possibility and presence.  A very worthwhile read!”
--LAUREN VANETT, Founder & Director, Core Strengths Coaching Program, San Francisco State University

“Roxanne Howe-Murphy’s book is truly one of the greatest gifts to come forth from the Enneagram world!  In Deep Living, Roxanne provides one of THE most accessible (simple and understandable) descriptions of the spiritual journey yet published.   She has made understandable and simple what generally defies language—the experience of the soul.  I’m finding myself wanting to give this book to almost everyone I know and care about.  What a gift!”
--LYNDA ROBERTS, Faculty, The Enneagram Institute, Treasurer, The Board of the International Enneagram Association, Project Management Professional

“Deep Living clearly & concisely describes the fundamentals of personal growth and spiritual awareness.   This could easily be a text book for a college class focused on the emotional and social intelligence required to excel personally and professionally.  It will transform your life.” --DOUG MOORE, PhD, Psychologist and Life Coach

“Finally, here is a book that reveals how to achieve inner peace by first tuning into your body’s brilliance.  Roxanne Howe-Murphy’s Deep Living is a book that you will reference again and again.  Using the ancient wisdom of the Enneagram, Roxanne skillfully navigates a life path of happiness and fulfillment.  You will find veil after veil lifting to reveal your true and beautiful self.”
--VICKY CRUZ, DC, Speaker, Facilitator and Instructor, NET Certified Practitioner, Co-Founder, Full Moon Healing Center

“Roxanne Howe-Murphy's latest book, Deep Living, is an absolute treasure! Based on the ancient wisdom of the Enneagram, this book provides us with a detailed map of our personality, our frequently occurring behavioral patterns, and the deep living transformation process. Roxanne gifts us with the necessary tools to become ‘pattern detectives’; thereby enabling us to shift from seeing our patterns in life’s rear-view mirror, to noticing and catching ourselves in the midst of enacting our patterns, to seeing them just before we engage in them. Roxanne’s book is a rich resource that I will turn to time and again to access wisdom and understandings about personality and behavioral patterns, and to move towards greater awareness and presence.”
--JANET SMITH, PhD, Director, The Education Institute, University of Canberra, Australia

“Deep Living is a valuable resource to unlock our personality structure and to transform into our evolutionary nature.”

As you dive into Deep Living, you’ll uncover nuances about your own innate capacities, gifts, and beliefs that will help you discover ways you can deepen the way you live your life.” --CAROL MCCLELLAND, PhD, Author, The Seasons of Change: Using Nature's Wisdom to Grow through Life's Inevitable Ups and Downs

"...Deep Living provides a map to interior freedom and more genuine relationships with God, Self and others.
-- SUZANNE BUCKLEY, Editor, Sacred Is the Call--The Transformational Work of Spiritual Direction Programs for Personal and Professional Growth

To be at home in yourself and at ease in the world are among life's greatest blessings.

In Deep Living, Dr. Roxanne Howe-Murphy illuminates the stunning and paradoxical mechanisms through which our personalities unconsciously take each of us in exactly the opposite direction of our deepest nature. The result is a seemingly unsolvable inner divide.

Offering a radically compassionate, rare, and mature approach to personal change, Dr. Howe-Murphy integrates the ancient wisdom of the Enneagram with presence-based practices for everyday living and unexpected healing processes to transform how we see and experience ourselves and the world around us.

By shifting where we put our attention, our innate and evolutionary capacity for the deep intelligence of presence grows, and we move toward our soul's true longing and purpose. Tapping into our direct, in-the-moment experience leads us from a distorted sense of self and others to an authentic connection with what's true. By doing so, we move:
  • from inner inadequacy to real inner authority
  • from struggle to real inner peace
  • from self-limiting ideas and stories to real inner liberation and authenticity
Used consciously, the Enneagram is a map of nine profound journeys from separateness to wholeness and love. In Deep Living, readers will find the reflection of their particular true nature.

I had never used the Enneagram before when I read Deep Living, but that didn't matter. I gained some insights into myself that have transformed several limiting beliefs I've carried for years. It was fascinating to discover that people often do the opposite of what will give them what they truly want. This book helps you identify how you might be sabotaging your greatest fulfillment and makes the process of changing that actually enjoyable. This self-help book isn't trying to change you or fix you; it just empowers you to get out of your own way, make better choices for your life and stop wasting so much energy resisting. I feel less stressed, more present, and like I've developed a sixth sense for my own ease and joy.

Deep Living is a guidebook and a map for living a full, awake life. From the first pages of the book in which Dr. Roxanne Howe-Murphy talks about her own journey and how she came to write this book, you will be inspired. Deep Living offers us an accessible path we all can follow, and through which we each can live a more meaningful life, a life that is freer, clearer and more joyous.

Deep Living explores how our personality structure forms in childhood around our great loss of what is most dear to us - the connection to our true nature. In the book you will gain a solid understanding of how this loss leads us to more suffering through the coping habits we then develop. Howe-Murpht gently and brilliantly invites us to look at ourselves with honesty and compassion so we can welcome the life we so want for ourselves. For those who know the Enneagram, you will find new ways to look at yourself through this profound tool for transformation. For those who haven't been introduced to it yet, you are in for a treat. The book presents the Enneagram in a way that encourages understanding and fully supports you to work with what you discover about yourself.

Deep Living is unlike any other Enneagram book I've read. Howe-Murphy demonstrates an unparalleled ability to take the Enneagram and gracefully hand it to us in the most accessible, usable form. Deep understanding of the Enneagram is intermixed with the appropriate practical approaches to addressing the various common challenges and difficulties that often arise as we go deeper into ourselves and closer to our true nature. This format is incredibly supportive. Roxanne Howe-Murphy helps us feel that the experiences we might encounter on this path are normal, and with her love and deep understanding of what is possible for the human soul, she guides us towards finding our own true heart.

I'm a longtime fan of Dr. Roxanne Howe-Murphy's work and an ongoing student of the Enneagram as a framework for understanding ourselves and what drives us. Deep Living, narrows in on the relationship we have with ourselves. If you read this book you will have tools to feel more comfortable in your own skin - more authentically you. With Roxanne's guidance, we are shown how to come home to our most authentic selves, and as we do, we discover that our relationship to the challenges and opportunities in our lives changes, as well.

Use what you learn to take steps that are out of your comfort zone, feel pain, while being courageous and trusting that you are becoming more of who you are with each step. The cliché, "get out of your own way" will have new meaning after you realize that your personality is running the show and not allowing your true nature to shine. Read Deep Living and breath a sign of relief.

This book was not just an outline of the 9 types, wherein you indentify who you are. This book is a tool to assist you in exploring yourself, with beautiful positive language, that allows you to use the Enneagram as a tool for growth. The first day I got it, I could not put it down, and was up until midnight drinking up the wisdom, It has given me insights into my relationships, my patterns, my strenghts and how I can work with my challenges. I have a notebook with this book, where I have made notes of new perspectives I want to embody. I have used some of the tools and ideas for Deep Living and am thrilled. I highly recommend this book to those wanting to live with themselves, others, and life more deeply.

This book is both a beautiful introduction to the Enneagram and a simple, yet powerful guide to connecting with yourself. As an executive coach, I'm sure I'll be giving it as a gift to clients as they seek to grow as humans, along side our professional work. I'd say this book is just right for someone who has started down the self-development path and is wondering how to understand themselves better, at a personality level and beyond personality. I appreciated, as I sat out in the California redwoods and read this book, that Roxanne Howe-Murphy invites you to go beyond understanding and actually connect with your body, your planet, your heart, your curiosity. Additionally, as you read about the other Enneagram personality types, this book invites you to observe the breadth of how people "do" themselves, and approach others with deep regard.

As can be seen from all the five-star reviews, this is a special book on the Enneagram.

A possible reason for this may be found in the way this book is thought-out. I have noticed that Enneagram authors who reference Karen Horney seem to "get" what the Enneagram is about. Howe-Murphy's approach to the Enneagram is presented in three "Clusters" which conform to Karen Horney's three strategies for dealing with "Social Discomfort": the resigned solution (Types, Nine, Four, Five); the expansive solution (Types Three, Seven, Eight); and the compliant solution (Types Six, One, Two).

This author introduces each of these three "Hornevian" (Riso-Hudson) clusters with a discussion of their "Shared Themes": "energetically withdrawn," "inserting one's power," and "figuring out...what needs to be done."

Summing Up: In this book, a perceptive author, Roxanne Howe-Murphy, has made it abundantly clear why what Karen Horney had to say regarding the human psyche is relevant to an insightful understanding of the Enneagram.
