Book Description

February 16, 2010
Deep Navigation is the 2010 Boskone Book by Boskone's Guest of Honor Alastair Reynolds. It contains a broad spectrum of his work, from his first published story, "Nunivak Snowflakes," through "The Receivers" and "Monkey Suit," both published within the last year, plus an introduction by his friend, and former Boskone Guest, Stephen Baxter. It is well-known that the scope of Dr. Reynolds' stories is vast; his Revelation Space stories alone attest to that. This collection shows his impressive range, from the claustrophobic Antarctic station, "Byrd Land Six," to the branespanning "Tiger, Burning," to the millennia-long quest of "Fury." His viewpoints are as varied as his constant production of big, new ideas. A lone artist calmly painting the universe. A planetary ecological struggle reduced to a game. A fleeing assassin drawn into an alien rescue between the stars. The full-color dust jacket is by John Picacio, the Boskone 47 Official Artist.

Great collection, even if one or two stories have appeared in other publications you can not go wrong if you're an Alastair Reynolds reader or anyone looking for a thought provoking escape from an evolving superstar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, August 11, 2010
This review is from: Deep Navigation (Hardcover)
This book was a very nice selection of short stories from Alastair; several of which are earlier works (80s) of his. I have all of his books as part of my permanent collection, and this one will be a fine addition to that. The diversity of the stories is great, with a certain British twist to several of them. The only reason for 4 stars instead of five is that I did not find any of the stories truly 'original' of the author. But the book is very nice; I got the hardcover as always and it is sturdy with nice bond paper. Of the stories, I found the ones with Revelation Space relations to be the most exciting. But 'Stroboscopic' has an interesting premise given the limitations he artificially put into the story, and 'Tiger, Burning' as a thought provacative large-scale story. Highly recommended for all long-time fans, as well as anyone new to the author.
