3.0 out of 5 stars Camera! Action! Dissatisfaction!
The worst camera work ever. I fully agree with Francois Grenier: "Child in time" is ruined because of this. Blackmore plays a great solo, but all one can see is the rest of the band. Glover plays solo in "Fireball", but, again, these camera morons show somebody else. I still don't understand why the band did not include "Smoke on the water" into this show.

I saw this dvd in the store and it took few days till i bought it- i thought to my self- again , another deep purple dvd - most of it black&white (monochrome), but i admit now, i was wrong- This show - " the Scandinavian , live in denmark march 1972 is a MUST HAVE to any fan. 9 tracks from the machine head live , the only complete visual document of deep purple mk2 concert you can get played ii good quality sound , with good picture quality ( for this days ) ( monochrome only) but i was very surprized- this is great show indeed .The second show was filmed in the concert hall of hofstra university in America 25 min only 3 tracks were kept , good sound quality and very good picture quality ( for this days in colour !!!and you can choose "dts " or Dolby digital 5.0) ( strnge kind of woman, smoke on the water and space truckin.
i personally prefer the "Scandinavian nights " show (copenhagen show)!!! - the best deep purple you can watch - this is the " machine head " live!!! ( you can choose dolby 2.0 - god sound or Dolby digital 5.0). 97 min!!! ( and i didn't talk about the 1 track bnus from 74' show , from California jam (bonus vision )( i bought already the fll show last year).
great dvd , must have , ian paice and ian gillan in their finest , deep purple in their best , i saw Ritchie B in better days ( with dio 1977 germany show " caled also "on stage" in their live album , but i enjoy his efforts also here!!! roger glover always great and Jon lord made good job but we saw Him also in better days... but this dvd is the best visual dvd you can get from this days... i wish to get something like this from scorpions ( "Tokyo tapes ") maybe in some days .... but i can't believe we will ...
Believe me i also thought to my selve i would not buy this DVD but i glad i did!!! ( highway tar , strange kind of woman, child in time ( 17.43 min ) , the mule , lazy , space trackin , also day played " fireball ", "Lucille " and " black night" !
(in the 1972 show)

5.0 out of 5 stars One word: ESSENTIAL!, October 28, 2005
This review is from: Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73 (DVD)
The other reviews have covered the bases on this one pretty well. A tremendous effort by Simon Robinson and the DPAS in getting this out in such wonderful fashion. The picture and sound are as good as can be, with a special note that the 1973 sound is SUPERB! The only downside is the fact that all the surviving footage from Hofstra '73 is what was horribly butchered for the ABC TV broadcast. However, an ABC moron with a razor blade couldn't destroy the sheer charisma and energy that MkII had in 1973. You can't even tell the end is near, as Gillan and nemesis Ritchie Blackmore exchange smiles and look like they're enjoying themselves immensely in both shows. The '73 show was filmed mere weeks before the band imploded. When the smoke cleared in June, vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover were gone. This DVD is the first in a proposed series of archival releases being coordinated by Simon Robinson. The second DVD will be the 1974 Cal Jam show, which is to be released early in 2006. Support the effort and buy this one!

Would be much more pleasant to see than "Lucille". Ian Paice is, as always, in great form.

One of the only DVDs with Ritchie Blackmore in the line up - so worth buying just because of that! (Deep Purple without Blackmore is just NOT the same - bit like Eagles without Don Felder I guess; you can always replace the guitarist with somebody skilled and competent, but you can't replace the magic.)
If you are a die hard Purple fan then buy this and add it to your archives. Please note that most of it is in black and white and the sound and vid quality is a bit spotty at times - but this is the early 70's, so don't expect 21st century technology. All I can say is that it's a real pity more bands don't release old stuff like this.
If you are not a die hard Purple fan you will probably notice the imperfections. But for me personally, the "Machine Head" era line up of Gillian, Blackmore, Lord, Glover and Paice was my favourite and their live performances are energy filled, wonderfully executed and raw, so I really enjoyed this blast from the past. (They are all superb musicians where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts! Guess that's the magic of a "group", when it works.)

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! Great concert!, April 7, 2006
This review is from: Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73 (DVD)
I gotta say that this DVD is actually pretty damn good. The sound and video may not be the best, but man, what a great show! My favorite is CHILD IN TIME, Blackmore really stands out in this one. Space Trucking, Highway Star, Lazy are also pretty damn good.

Disappointing notes: well, the only thing that disappointed a little bit is the sound, but man, this is a 34 years old document, what can you do about it?

About the bonus track? David Coverdale wasn't that bad, he got a great voice, but man, Ian Gillan is the best!

FINAL NOTES: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to any rock/hard rock fan!!!

Other recomendations: Never Say Die (Black Sabbath), Live at the Isle of Wight (Jethro Tull), Led Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin).

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive video recording of Deep Puple, MK2, from the day, January 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73 (DVD)
If you are a true Deep Purple fan from the late `60s and early `70s, from the era of "In Rock", "Fireball" and "Machine Head", and if are looking for a live concert performance from that era, then you have found it. This is it, and unbelievable and unlikely as it may seem that no other live performances of Deep Purple from that era were recorded and kept, this is apparently the case.

The DVD consists of one complete MK2 concert performed in Copenhagen in '72, plus a portion of a concert performed in New York early the following year, and a small amount of "bonus footage" of the MK3 lineup recorded at California Jam in '94. The Copenhagen recording is the only known complete video recording of a MK2 live performance. That alone is saying a lot. It includes a performance of "Child in Time", although that is certainly not the best performance on the DVD. The New York concert is the only known video recording of the MK2 lineup performing "Smoke on the Water". Unfortunately, it is edited for length, but it is still excellent, and certainly better than nothing at all. The video of the Copenhagen concert is in B&W, and it isn't great technical video by any stretch, but it nevertheless captures the MK2 lineup at their peak, putting on an excellent performance. The New York concert is in color and the technical quality is much better.

Being a true Deep Purple fan from those days, this DVD literally brought tears to my eyes, and a lump to my throat. When I do the math, the number I come up with is thirty-five. Can it really have been that long since the days when I put on the headphones and listened to three of my favorite albums of all time? How could so much time have passed?

One final thought to share ... one of the reviewers here, a fellow named Francois Grenier, slammed this DVD, calling it "one for the garbage can", and used vulgarities within his review. He evidently bought it because he is a fan of Blackmore's later stuff and was interested in seeing some of his earlier stuff. Francois Grenier is no Deep Purple fan, and in all likelihood, has never owned a Deep Purple album, notwithstanding what he claims in his review. There is simply no way that a true Deep Purple fan from those days could not appreciate this DVD ... no way ... no how. It is unfortunate that he saw fit to display his ignorance in such a public manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Purple but still stunning in black and white! A must own!!, June 9, 2007
This review is from: Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73 (DVD)
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

The opportunity for those that were too young to see the most well respected line-up of Deep Purple (Mark II) as far back as circa 72/73 is something that you can't pass up. For those that have lost a bit of their hair but none of the zest for great rock and roll, you too will be blown away.

Don't let any of the negative connotations deter you from enjoying such a fantastic release. Even though the video is black & white it doesn't detract from the all out musical muscle Deep Purple contained. Certainly all of us want the camera to focus on Ritchie during the solos but the long time fan has known from day one that Blackmore is not exactly overjoyed with the presence of a photographer near him. Be thankful for the opportunity to experience a brilliant band in a creative period.

The critics that feel Ritchie Blackmore was all about flash haven't a clue about his ability. He can play a classically based solo in a heavy metal song. The notes he plays are so tasteful that it is with effortless motion one solo after another become memorable.

When you first play the DVD watch it straight through to fully absorb the energy and power of the band. After you have seen it a time or two focus in on a few songs. "Lazy" will show why Ian Paice is one of the most underrated rock drummers. His timing is terrific and he can play tasty fills on a wide spectrum of sounds. "Child In Time" is Ian Gillian's calling card. A song with such intense emotion you feel as if you are in the front row and your heart beat increases as the song builds to a crescendo. Jon Lord's improvisational technique is superlative during "Space Truckin." Mr. Blackmore will have your head spinning and ears wide open throughout the performance, however pay attention to the classic cover version of "Lucille." One of many great Blackmore attributes is the ability to take a great rock song and add his personal flavor but still pay homage to the tune. Long time fans of Deep Purple will understand the analogy from previous Ritchie interpretations of the Beatles-"Help", "Hush" from Joe South, and Donovan's "Lalena."

The final word is all of us should not be lazy and start to enjoy seeing Deep Purple as they were when the "Mark II" line-up ruled the rock and roll world.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Footage, April 26, 2006
By
Tom S. (Cleveland, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73 (DVD)
This DVD was made from restored sources, thus the image quality can vary. The first part of the DVD, the 1972 footage, is in black and white, but the quality is very good, none the less. It is a complete unedited show from start to finish. There is at times some video distortion from the sheer volume, as explained in the liner notes (The high volume caused the cameras to distort slightly at times). In spite of this, and considering how old the source tapes are, they did a very good job on producing the best possible product.

My one complaint is that it is hard to get an uninterrupted live version of highway star from this lineup on video...On this 1972 footage, during the second verse of Highway Star, Gillan starts screaching "oay!" at a security guy several times (apparently the security guy was "roughing up" an overly-enthusiastic fan), then hits him with the mike stand, wags his finger at the guy, then continues singing...let's just say it interrupted the "flow" of the song. On the Come Hell or High Water DVD from 1994 (not the CD, though), during Highway Star, it's Blackmore who doesn't even appear on stage until it's time for his solo. Then he stops in the middle of the best part of the solo to throw a pitcher of water at a camera man. Ah, the spontaneity of the live performance! Other than that, however, it's a classic performance, for sure.

Now, part 2: Both the sound and video are truly AMAZING on the color 1973 "In Concert" footage--NOTICEABLY better. The songs on the '73 show are heavily edited, as mentioned by other reviewers, so I won't elaborate, but the quality is indeed outstanding. The three songs on this abbreviated show are Strange Kind of Woman, Space Truckin' and Smoke on the Water.

This is probably some of the best surviving live footage available from the Mark II lineup, so I certainly DO recommend this DVD. It is very enjoyable, and gives an interesting and compelling look at the band at various stages.

The bonus preview footage from the now available 1974 California Jam DVD, featuring the Mark III lineup is a bit jerky, due to the restoration and transfer process, but the sound seems to be very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A band that could truly play live, March 2, 2006
This review is from: Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73 (DVD)
I agree with the guy who said "How the west was really won". You only have to hear this DVD, and/or Made in Japan to know this was the best pioneering hard rock band of all time (not Zep!). Yes, Led Zeppelin were better song writers, but at times(let's be honest people) were sloppy in their live performances. This DVD is not as great as made in Japan but a close second. A hell of a lot better than later concerts when Blackmore got to full of himself. Please believe me; if you love Made in Japan you'll love this.
