Prime Cuts: Hiding Place, How Great Thou Art, His Eyes

"Saddle up your horses we've got a trail to blaze/Through the wild blue yonder of God's amazing grace." When Steven Curtis Chapman sings those words from his 1991 hit "The Great Adventure," you can picture him wearing his cowboy hat, spurring his stallion and riding right into the great western skies. Though Chapman is known for his pop Christian hits, there's always been a country streak in him. Ever since the early 90s, many of Chapman's compositions have been covered by country artists such as BJ Thomas ("Precious Promise"), Glen Campbell & Billy Dean ("I Will Be There"). By the turn of the Millennium, Chapman began co-writing with Mark Miller a number of tracks for country music's Sawyer Brown on their "Mission Temple Firework Stand" record. One of the songs "Tarzan and Jane," has become a Sawyer Brown fan favorite. As if that was not enough, in 2005, Chapman released "The Abbey Road Seasons." The EP had a distinctive acoustic country flavor. Truth be known, even from Chapman's own canon of songs, many of them (such as "Long Way Home," "One Heartbeat at a Time" and "Angels' Wings") could work as country hits. Teaming with the famous Southern restaurant chain Cracker Barrel, Chapman has finally released his newly recorded country Christian album "Deep Roots."

"Deep Roots" as the title suggests is a nostalgic nod back to Chapman's Kentucky roots. In a state which fathered bluegrass music, all of these songs have an acoustic stripped down backing flourished with the rustic sounds of the fiddle, banjo, pedal steel, steel guitar and piano. Here Chapman resurrects seven traditional hymns of the church giving each a down home country/bluegrass reading. Bluegrass stalwart Ricky Skaggs is the natural choice for a duet partner.

It may be a bit corny or a cliché to describe an album released by Cracker Barrel restaurant as "comfort food," but that's exactly what this album is - wonderful comfort and nourishment for tired pilgrims. Great old hymns (and a few of SCC's own wonderful classics including Hiding Place and My Redeemer is Faithful and True); Steven's beautiful guitar work; the gentle, reverent vocals with a bluegrass lilt; some great duets... it's all a perfect combination.

Standouts include:
How Great Thou Art (a duet with Steven's daughter-in-law Jillian Edwards Chapman),

He Touched Me (with Steven's father and brother),

What a friend we have in Jesus (with Ricky Skaggs),

and Be Still and Know (featuring Steven's son Caleb).

My weary soul is satisfied and strengthened as I listened. Thanks SCC and Cracker Barrel!

This cd is awesome! I love it! It is very calming to me, during a very difficult time in my life. The truth of these old hymns that have been around for ages, and have stood the test of time and are still true today, resinate with something deep inside me that these words are true, and I can stand on them wth my life. SCC's country bluegrass acoustic sound calls you home to another time and place to Kentucky and good people back in the day. It takes me back to my childhood and back in history when these hymns were popular. Thank you Cracker Barrell for making this cd possible!

If you like hymns and Steven Curtis Chapman, you'll love this. Some of the southern roots come out with him in the "old" southern gospel tracks.

The version of Cinderella is very fabulous! As a Dad of two girls I love it.

The duets include some of his family--daughter-in-law, Steven's Dad and I believe uncle.

So the feel is very much grounded in family.

What a talented performer and family. Steven Chapman is one of my all-time favorite performers. His transparency and faith have been an inspiration to me. On this CD, we have the pleasure of hearing a few of his past songs as well as some traditional hymns. He is joined by his father, brother, son, daughter in-law, and Ricky Skaggs. It's a peaceful and inspiring set of songs that fit the mood if you're feeling reflective - or just like to hear some outstanding music by a premier Christian vocalist/guitarist/song writer.

Simply masterful moments you are sure to enjoy if you love to let your heart sing to God or to be drawn into intimate presents with Him. Love the country blue-grass feel to some of the most beloved hymns and favorite SCC songs. The musical interpretation is heavenly. The SCC standard has been surpassed once again. I thank God for the glorious fragrant gift he has given us in Steven Curtis Chapman. For SCC always takes me by the hand and leads me on a deeper, fuller journey that just fills my tank.

It is so refreshing to hear solid lyrics with arrangements that leave room to breath. The harmonies are beautiful and for those who remember and were touched by his early work, it takes you back to a time where songs didn't sound clogged by all the noise. The arrangement is very tasteful and you can enjoy the lyrics with the harmonies. It's like you're hearing them for the first time. Buy it!

Deep Roots: by Steven Curtis Chapman

This is a relaxing well-arranged music of intimate moments of Gospel songs that give Hope and light across generations and through all of our days. With quiet vocals accompanied with acoustic guitar, banjo, piano, bass, cello, baritone guitar, dobro, and steel guitar.

Steven Curtis Chapman is the lead vocalist with brother Herb Chapman, Jr. and father Herb Chapman, Sr., Scott Sheriff, filling in background voices and featuring Jillian Edwards Chapman, Caleb Chapman, and Ricky Skaggs.

After starting his career in the late 1980s as a singer/songwriter of contemporary Christian music, Chapman has since been recognized as one of the most prolific singers in the genre, releasing more than 20 albums to date. Chapman has also won five Grammy awards and 56 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, more than any other artist in history. His seven "Artist of the Year" Dove Awards, his latest in 2009, are also an industry record. As of 2007, Chapman has sold more than 10 million albums and has 8 RIAA-certified Gold or Platinum albums.

Chapman was recognized in the Fall 2010 issue of Wood & Steel discussing the new Taylor 714 Signature Series guitar in honor of his youngest daughter Maria Sue. The guitar features the flower from Maria's picture and the word "SEE" on the 12th fret in Maria's handwriting. In 2003, Chapman starred in the Christian film Christmas Child.

Track Listing: "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus" "How Great Thou Art" (featuring Jillian Edwards Chapman) "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"(featuring Ricky Skaggs) "Blessed Assurance" "Life is Like a Mountain Railroad(Life's Railway to Heaven)" (featuring Herb Chapman Sr. and Herb Chapman Jr.) "He Touched Me"(featuring Herb Chapman Sr. and Herb Chapman Jr.
