4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game! December 26, 2011

Carcassonne is a fun board game to play and this adaptation is very good with quick game place and easy game piece placement. What you need to know, however, is that it's an English adaptation of a German game, so the manual that comes as an Adobe file with the game is all in German. HOWEVER, you CAN download the English manual from the page where you buy the game; look under Product Details. Right under the words Product Details, are the words "Game Manual: English [PDF]" and if you click on the word "English," you can download the manual. I have to admit that I didn't see this at first and I spent about an hour online trying to track down the English translation only to find it right where I stared. Oops! I would suggest saving a copy of the English manual to the same place where the German manual installed--in my case, it installed it to a folder on the desktop.

It's a complicated game; don't be afraid to lose a few games first as you are learning. Be warned that the computer players will not play nicely in their own little sandboxes; they will back-stab you unmercifully whenever they get the chance. I'm hoping that playing on the computer will help me learn to play better so that I when I play against my friends, I'll have a better chance at winning!

You are able to play this game against computer players and/or against human players using your PC. When you switch between human players, the background style changes so that you can more easily remember whose turn it is, since the computer players take their turns almost instantly and it's otherwise tricky to tell whose turn it is! I believe that you can customize both players background styles and which menus show, etc., too.

The 2001 Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) winner is back on the PC! I say "back" because this particular version was originally available a number of years ago exclusively (?) through Koch Media Deutschland. (This involved buying the game and its expansions - separately - through a foreign language web site and then combing the internet for a way to switch the interface over to English.)

While that previous version is still running nicely on my older Windows XP laptop, it was not (and is not) compatible with Windows 7. This version IS compatible, however (Yay!), and it has all the bells and whistles previously available in the Koch Media version.

    Included:

    The original Carcassonne.
    The River Tile mini-expansion.
    Expansion 1: Inns and Cathedrals
    Expansion 2: Traders and Builders
Mini-expansion: King and Scout (Referred to as Expansion 3 in-game.)

These can be turned on and off to your heart's content so that you get exactly the kind of Carcassonne experience that you want.

Other good news -- a few "rule-tweak" options!!

You have the option of toggling various rule-changes:

Choose from 1st, 2nd, or 3rd edition farm scoring rules; choose between 2- or 4-point two-tile city scoring; you can choose to have the game remove tiles to give players an equal number of turns; and you can enable "hardcore" mode which doesn't show you where tiles can be legally placed. (You're on your own there!) You can also enable game and turn time-limits if you desire.

Finally, you have the option of playing against 10 different levels of computer opponent, playing against human players (or some combination of both), creating and playing games on a LAN, or even online.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Version of Carcassone but... March 2, 2012

First off, our family has the board game version of Carcassone and I love it. I was excited to see this downloadable version available through your site. It was pretty easy to download onto my computer and graphics/sounds ect.. are great. One has the option to play against the computer, with other real humans or set it up to play with online members. However, as a previous customer mentioned, there aren't directions on how to play this computer version OR a copy of the game rules included. When I was doing some research on the computer version of Carcassonne, I did come across two sites that were very helpful for learning to play this computer game. Hope this helps future customers.

    Carcasonne Game Rules: [...]
    Carcasonne Computer Game Directions: [...]
*Note: Be sure to click on "Playing A Game: Windows - details" to learn how to move game pieces and place icons.

I want to give this game a 5 star mark as it IS an excellent family game but because of the issue of "no directions" I have to give it a 3 star rating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit or Miss July 2, 2012

I first installed this on my laptop running Windows 7 Home premium. It installed and ran OK, but now it hangs up on the splash screen. I have uninstalled the program, and reinstalled it, but I cannot get it to run again. I have even uninstalled it, used system restore to a previous state, re-downloaded the file and installed it fresh, and it still hangs up when starting.

I have installed it on another Windows 7 machine, and it runs OK. It will not remember any new players I create. I have installed it on one of my Windows XP machines, and that install will remember new players. I am a bit disappointed, because the laptop is the machine I most wanted it to run on.

There are virtually no help or instruction files that work, so if you don't already know how to play, you may be out of luck.
