I still recall the first time I heard this album. I had recently had the opportunity to see Roberts play at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival and had decided to pick up some of his recorded music. When I popped the cassette into the player I was amazed by the rich and varied compositions I encountered. The pieces range from middle eastern influenced tunes such as Nebuchadnezzar to the bopesque The Governor. However, the most imaginative and illustratrive composition is the Album's title track. This album still ranks among my top ten and when I wish to take a journey out of the everyday or mundane this is usually the soundtrack I take with me.

Marcus Roberts always amazes me with his fine arrangements and this album is no exception. The textures of the music embellish the various moods he develops, from Eastern to swing to soulful romance. The band is exceptional and the inter-connection between the players is fantastic.

Roberts is in fine form. His silky smooth piano playing on Nebuchadnezzar and Spiritual Awakening to his mesmerizing piano skipping on The Governor, E. Dankworth and Deep in the Shed are wonderful. The solo pieces are pure fun. Soak in this album. It's romance and swing. It's great jazz.

One of the first "trad" jazz albums I bought - on cassette tape - nearly twenty years ago. I recently bought the CD version. Still beautiful after all those years, and for me, one of the best by Marcus Roberts.
