Buffalo New York's scuzz-rockers the Blowtops deal in a gory, frenzied blues that can be traced to a number of antecedents. The band borrows from the graveyard rockabilly of the Cramps, the low-budget horror imagery of the Misfits, and the free-form scree of Pussy Galore, played with the same amphetamined garage intensity of their hometown brethren/labelmates Baseball Furies. Deep Thrust is awash with tin foil crunch and trash can echo, rejecting all low end frequencies in favor of shrill treble and dentist drill feedback. The results are intentionally painful, but the band is firmly grounded in the rock n' roll tradition, despite occasionally approaching noise levels of nearly avant-garde proportions. When vocals rise above the din, they're often guffaw-worthy; vocalist/guitarist Creepy Dave is given to themes like sexy car crashes and the angst of teenage zombies, trespassing through Glenn Danzig territory.
