4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing sounds, no matter how you define "Music", September 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep Voices (Audio CD)
I liked the other Roger Payne recording, "Songs of the Humpback Whale" so I thought I would try this recording which also includes blue and right whales. The humpback songs are well-remastered. The noises of the water and the boat do not interfere with the songs; they enhance the experience by creating a sense of listening from the boat. The humpback songs have a lot of variety. The track, "Whales Charging a Boat" is pretty intense. The two tracks of blue whale songs were very surprising because the whales sing in a very low tone ("Deep Voices"). I'll have to play this song through my floorstanding speakers to hear how low the sounds go. The right whale songs are less varied than the humpback songs, but the snoring and breathing sounds are intriguing. It is wonderful to be able to hear songs from the largest creatures on earth. "A portion of the royalties will be shared with the Wildlife Conservation Society to benefit the work of the Whale Conservation Institute."
