5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner!, December 30, 2001
This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Alam's first book, Dive Deep and Deadly, but Deep Water Death is even better! The plot of this second offering in the series is well developed and fresh and involves illegal midwifery. Once again, Ms. Alam has transported the reader deep into the bowels of the humid Florida swamps with beautiful writing and descriptions. As you read, you find yourself listening for the tell tale critter sounds and feel the closeness of the steamy air. Her main character, Luanne Fogarty, is smart, witty, competent and extremely likable, without the overbearing cockiness of some mystery heroines. I look forward to the next book in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky characters, a swamp setting, and a twisting plot, November 25, 2001

"Deep Water Death" by Glynn Marsh Alam, has all the elements that I love most about mysteries -- distinctive, quirky, interesting, and live characters; a setting (in the Florida swamps)that the reader can feel, see, hear, and smell; and a plot that keeps twisting and turning and finally resolves itself in an entirely satisfactory manner. Luanne Fogarty, Alam's protagonist, is bright, competent, and witty. Her sex scenes are some of the funniest I've ever read. Alam writes about cave diving in a sensitive and knowledgeable way that makes even us claustrophobics recognize the beauty of it. I was equally captivated by Alam's first book, and look forward to reading her next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Luanne, October 28, 2001

After reading Glynn Marsh Alam's first Luanne Fogarty mystery - Dive Deep and Deadly - I was very eager to read more about Luanne's life and adventures. Deep Water Death was worth the wait. This is a woman whose feistiness and spirit I love who finds herself in the midst of quite a mystery (and some interesting personal issues, as well). The book comes through with the colorful denizens (human and non-) of north Florida swamp country. The setting, characters, and story are compelling, and I found myself wanting to savor the book and keep reading to find out what happens next. Here's to many more situations for Alam to conjure up that will need Luanne's expertise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Return to Florida's Dangerous Waterways, October 25, 2001

Scuba diver Luanne Fogarty is trying to locate the owner of a remote piece of land when she stumbles on a pregnant mother giving birth. When the two midwives leave with the baby, she gets involved trying to track down the trio. Where did they go? And is the baby still alive? When a realtor dies in a mysterious accident, Luanne realizes there is much more at stake. Can she stay alive long enough to find the answers?

This follow up to last year's Dive Deep and Deadly is just as much fun as it's predecessor. The plot and characters are well developed, and the author's sense of place is very well defined. Using all five senses effectively, Ms. Alam manages to place the reader in Florida and Georgia right along with the characters.

I highly recommend both books in this series. They are a real treat for the mystery lover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cave Diving? well...not really., August 6, 2003
This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
I have read this book as well as Dive Deep and Deadly by Ms Alam. I thoroughly enjoyed both books and found them to be page turners. My only complaint is the character is supposedly a cave diver, but Ms. Alam has obviously not researched the sport as her terminology is incorrect throughout the book and is quite bothersome it it's inaccuracies. Otherwise, it's a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another "Diving" reading pleasure!, December 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
Just finished "Deep Water Death" and enjoyed every page of it just as much as "Diving Deep and Deadly"! The new characters in "Deep Water Death" are just as intriguing to meet for the first time as the characters in the first of Glynn Alam's novels. And I have a hunch that we haven't seen the end of Nick Summers yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, somewhat comical, and stylish mystery series, September 30, 2010
This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
Luanne Fogarty lives in the swamp. It's her chosen home; she maps the freshwater springs of northern Florida as a scuba diver and teaches linguistics part-time. She also finds herself in the middle of mysteries, and in this case, she stumbles upon a woman, Theresa Grassfield, giving birth in a small cabin in the woods, aided by two midwives, Josie and Sadie Wilburn. However, Theresa's baby is missing and with the aid of swamp native Pasquin, Detective Tony Amado, and her lover Vernon, Luanne aims to find the missing baby and discover the secret behind the Wilburn sisters' livelihood.

The characters in this story are very well fleshed out. Luanne is by turns pragmatic and romantic; Tony Amado is taciturn and gruff, until he crosses paths with investigator Patricia Eichols. The villains aren't boogeymen or stylized serial killers; they're simply human beings who've chosen a wrong path to follow. The plot starts off quickly and the pace never lets up. The author describes the swampy marshlands of northern Florida to the point that you can almost hear frogs croaking.

It's a wonderful mystery series that deserves a wider readership.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, June 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
DEEP WATER DEATH was an interesting book, it had a lot of twists, it was a mystery that you could figure out fairly early in the book. It would be a good vacation book, where you could put down and pick up again.

I bought it from Amazon, I love their huge selection of books, and fast delivery !

5.0 out of 5 stars Innocent Death, December 9, 2008

This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
Glynn M. Alam takes us deep into the swamps of Northern Florida as she searches for unexplored caves and space to set up equipment. An old house falling to ruin would give shelter from the frequent storms that sweep across the area. She encounters two women assisting a live birth in the mouldering dwelling. The women flee taking the baby with them to the river leaving Luanne Fogarty with the hemorrhaging mother.
DEEP WATER DEATH has more twists that the trails of water through invading foreign plant growth that destroys the natural supply of oxygen for native animal and plant life.
The search for the illegal mid-wives leads Luanne and the Sheriff's department to Georgia and the manipulations of a local owner seeking to establish a resort or commercial development within protected wetlands.
The second addition to the unique series is tightly plotted with just the right amount of romance for the sleuth.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great series I fear overlooked by mystery readers, August 20, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Deep Water Death (Paperback)
Writer Glynn Marsh Alam's Luanne Fogarty series takes place in the swampy area of northern Florida, a world few of us have experienced. She has a feel for the surroundings and is able to bring the atmosphere to life for the reader. Her stories are solid, the mystery sometimes secondary to the interesting people, motivations, and places.

Don't overlook Alam's relative obscurity as a mystery writer. These books are printed by a very small publisher so are not as widely marketed as they should be. Most mystery readers will find her books worth the read if they can find the books. There are so many less talented writers who receive more coverage. If you doubt my word--just try to find her books in your local library. My suggestion to Alam is to seek out a larger publisher--she deserves a wider audience.
