Woznick equates a surfer's giant wave abandonment with a soul-satisfying relationship with God. He writes that we should "go deep with our Creator"... "die to self and live for God". The book is both spiritual guide and autobiography. From a young age, Woznick felt the pull of the ocean; his writing conveys that feeling for readers. Other growing up stories about football, friends, and school add to his story. I was really surprised to learn that as an adult, he worked for a big CPA firm...and then, later started his own accounting firm. A surfing CPA! He tells how his friends wondered if he would be a priest because his faith was so deep. (Priests surf too!) His account of his solo trip from Molokai to Oahu across the Kaiwi Channel is exhilarating (a shark and man o' war jellyfish), and the historical and sincere spiritual musings that he includes give the reader a deeper sense of meeting God and really feeling alive. "Death was knocking. I felt totally alive."
Woznick lets readers feel how he finds God in the beauty and power of the huge waves that he rides: "each wave as being a pulse from the very heartbeat of God". His stories about the birth and growth of the surf culture interested me - I've never heard about it. His sincerity, sense of wonder, desire to surrender to God, and joy come through in this memoir.

I first heard Bear speak on the Coast to Coast AM radio talk show one night as I randomly turned on the radio before bed. I was immediately sucked into what he was saying when he started speaking of waves and the ocean and his near death experiences which was something I related to on a personal level just coming back from Hawaii and having some near death experiences of my own in BIG waves this past winter. I knew I wanted to either know him personally or know more immediately by the stories he was telling. I then heard he just released a book titled Deep In The Wave and was available on Amazon so ordered my copy immediately and made sure I heard what info I needed correctly by feverishly typing it into my iPhone notepad! I received it in perfect time right as I was stepping out the door for a camping trip. I finished his book in 2 days which is unlike me and says a ton for me! His book was up close and personal and real in every aspect inspiring throughout each and every chapter! I felt very connected to Bear throughout his journey and life passages and couldn't put the book down and was excited to pick up where I and Bear left off. His love and passion for living and loving life is undeniable and his love for the ocean is even greater if possible! A beautiful book literally in EVERY aspect and couldn't recommend it more to anyone wanting to smile and a beautiful reminder knowing that life IS good and to live it to its fullest each and every day! Thank you Bear. Mahalo.

Deep in the Wave is an amazing ride through Bear Woznick's life. Bear rides a wave through life that few have ridden before. Deep in the Wave demonstrates how God reveals himself through His creation, our passions and even the pain we experience along the way.

It is a quick and fun read. Deep in the Wave would make a great gift for anyone who needs to be encouraged or inspired.

As someone who has known Bear since his Baylor U. days, I was deeply moved and deeply impressed by where he has been and what he has done over the years. I knew Bear was extraordinary when I first got to know him back in the '70s but....WoW! I could hardly put this book down, each chapter left me eagerly paging on to the next to see where he was going. I found this book to be inspiring and, quite frankly, in-your-face challenging. Bear's clear prose puts his surfing and his spiritual quest in terms that lift up the reader. They cause me to say, "Wow. How do I meet the challenge to Go Deep Now?"

Mahalo, Bear.

I was able to finish this book in one sitting. It was inspiring, soulful and made me realize that you can make tremendous changes in your life at any age. Bear's connection to God made the story even more meaningful to where my husband and I are at in our spiritual journey as Christians. Not too mention, my husband grew up on Oahu, and this makes us long to head back to the land of Aloha and live a meaningful, spiritual and simple life. Mahalo Bear for inspiring us to be brave and embrace change, and remember that all things are possible through God!

A friend of mine, in Hawaii, recommended this book on FaceBook. I bought it, I read it, and I loved it! For me, as a surfer, wind-surfer, and skier the author, Bear Woznick's, descriptions of catching and riding waves were so accurate that I was able to re-live riding the waves again and right now I am in drought stricken Colorado. Nicely incorporated into the book is life, the lives we lead and the higher power that we have to come to terms with between our infrequent rides on the waves. Reading, DEEP IN THE WAVE was the nicest thing I have done to myself in a long time!

I heard Bear speak on the Busted Halo radio show on Sirius. Something about the way he spoke of God and his creation in relation to the ocean touched me deeply and I got this book on my kindle right away. I live in San Diego - but I am more of a mountain and forest loving girl and don't really get to the beach too often. But I was still able to relate to everything he shared. The various levels of intimacy and discovery of God's will in his life spoke to me and I could see correlations in my own land locked life. I may never experience the actual feeling of riding a wave but I, in my own way, was able to go deep in the wave of God's love and mercy. Share this book!
