Off What's Going On?,
By Dorcas (Orlando, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent V, 25% DEET 6 oz (Health and Beauty)
I live in rural Florida near a Lake, and I have a spring fed pond in my front yard. Unfortunately, these beautiful sights can be a breeding ground for insects of all sorts. Off and Cutter were my go to sprays for repelling mosquitoes and other bugs. However, in 2009 I found myself using seven times more spray--I counted the cans.
Deet has been identified as the key ingredient that repels biting bugs. Unfortunately, both Off and Cutter have significantly reduced the percent of Deet in their product, and it is more difficult to find the economical 11 oz can which was a 16 oz. can. Both Off and Cutter have also raised their prices on these products. I have old cans in my barn which show 65%, 50%, 35%, and 43.3%. The new Off spray was 15% in 2009, and is now 14.25% in 2010. It is to be noted that Deep Woods Off is at 25%, and a 6 oz can will cost you approximately $6.00 plus tax. Off and Cutter also have unscented versions of their spray. The Cutter brand was 23.0% in 2009, but in 2010 it changed its ingredients to N N-diethylm-toluamid at 9.5%. The Cutter brand is $8.00 plus tax for a 6 oz. can. I now use Repel Sportsmen Max made by WPC Brand in MO, which contains 40% Deet at $3.50 for a 9 oz. can. It repels bugs and it's a great deal. I purchase Repel at my local Big Lots stores.

Good stuff,
I'd rather fend off the bugs than come down with West Nile virus.
We used this product on a recent camping trip and found it to be safe and effective. With Off you can camp out, without a net encasing your entire camp site, and without mosquito netting hats. Go camping, and put on some Off. Enjoy the woods and the open air.

Very good at keeping mosquitos away, which is obviously the purpose, so on that account a very satisfactory result. The price to pay, though, is that it has a very strong insecticide smell that will permeate your clothing, bed, etc. Finally, there's the stickiness. Once on your skin, it's impossible not to feel it. I guess it can be compared to sunblock, not the ideal physical sensation, but necessary.

This is one of the better insect repellents I've used. Though it's unscented, there's still a very faint smell, but so faint it's hardly noticeable. I really liked that, since a lot of sprays have an overpowering smell. It has done a great job of keeping the pests away while I'm working outside.

Although this product wasn't completely unscented as the label stated, it did work well. I used it while mowing the lawn and doing other outside work. Since I live in the country, there are definitely mosquitoes, and I didn't get any bites. I'd recommend this product.

I used this product on all my kids, and my husband uses it at work as well. We give it lots of praise! We went to a park where there were tons of mosquitoes, and my kids didn't get bit once. They always swell up very big from bites, and this product protects them very well! I also like that it's unscented. We'll buy this again.

Peace and Love but Bugs are Bugs,
By I don't go out of my way to have chemicals around me. But what do people think is in those citronella candles? Somehow that's seen as benign, and who knows what chemicals get liberated as that smoke fills your little picnic. Anyway, watch those bugs fly right through the plume of smoke on those candles and try and convince yourself that they are effective. DEET is not natural. Mosquitoes are all natural. Eastern equine encephalitis is an all natural virus, not man-made, not manufactured in some cold, sterile lab. Malaria. All natural. Arsenic is natural too, completely organic. I once knew a guy with head lice who wouldn't cut his dreads because his dreads represented something very important to him. Nice guy too, I wanted to sympathize, but I thought a little misguided. Another buddy of mine, in admonition, adlibbed: "Dude! Peace and love, but bugs are bugs." Hearty laughs all around. Guess you had to be there. But that line has stayed with me. Strive towards organic solutions, but do what makes sense. Be smart, be safe, protect your kids.

Here in Houston it's extremely humid and mosquitoes are a rampant nuisance. In this environment, Off! Deep Woods was a highly effective insect repellent. My wife and I tested the product on our evening walks and were delighted to find that our usual five to ten mosquito bites never occurred!!! The spray leaves a slick layer of protection on our skin, but can also be sprayed on non-synthetic clothes. The instructions say that it can be used on the face if sprayed onto the hand and rubbed on, but I wouldn't recommend using this product anywhere near one's eyes or nose, as the fumes can be nauseating. The bottle says it's unscented, but the truth is there's a faint but pleasant Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil smell that lingers after the spray dries. Overall, this is an excellent product that I'd definitely recommend to anyone seeking an effective insect repellent.
