Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Deepak Chopra has done a fantastic job of making meditation accessible and fun! The first night I got it, I used it for the first three guided meditations, customized my happy colorful mandala, and used the play option some. Then about an hour or two later, I felt a wonderful sense of what I would call positively energized peace and well-being. I had been feeling kind of run down, anxious and somewhat depressed because of school, work, a stressful work environment, and of course holiday stress. I have had virtually no energy, but at the same time felt sort of overly anxious so that I couldn't sleep well and my mind was laden with worries, worries, worries. I knew beforehand that meditation had worked very well for me in these kinds of situations. However, I had gotten off track because of a momentarily overly busy lifestyle and then this led to just getting totally derailed. I heard about Leela from the tiny buddha website and picked up a copy at Gamestop. I LOVE IT!!!

One thing I really like about it is that you have so many options of HOW to meditate. You can choose to do guided meditation with the silky voice of Deepak Chopra guiding you or you can do silent meditation. And within each of these categories you have various meditations to choose from or you can do them all as many times as you want. If you want to focus on a particular meditation or a particular chakra, you have that option.

And what I really really like is that even if you are too tired or worn out to do these kinds of meditation, you can always do the play version which is absolutely wonderful! In the past, the number one reason I have stopped meditating is because I've been too physically and/or mentally exhausted to even sit and meditate. Soon thereafter, I end up getting off track with my meditation practice and then it's simply not a part of my routine at all. Inevitably, I end up getting so run down that I have to bring everything to a screeching halt and re-vamp my schedule/routine/etc. in order to fit meditation back into my schedule somehow because it works so much better than anything else I've tried (and I've tried all kinds of stuff!) I have a very emotionally taxing job so it is critical that I regularly practice self-care; otherwise, I will not be able to give the quality of service my clients need and deserve. This is but one important reason why this program is so great. You have so many levels of meditation and choices at each level.

In addition, all the meditations have a beautifully colorful and abstractly organic scene to watch if you'd like. There are also soothing sounds so if the visual focus doesn't work for you, just listen to the music.

I have read some good books on meditation such as "8 Minute Meditation" as well as many others. I also have many DVD's of Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc., etc., and they are all wonderful. I've also had personal training in many of these areas as well as martial arts and several forms of dance. However, for someone who is serious about meditation and who has experienced the truly deep and expansive rewards of a good meditation practice, this is a very nice resource to have on hand. Variety is the spice of life, they say, and it is this variety that will help keep you on track. This has helped me keep on track, even though we all fall short of our own expectations sometimes. After all, we are perfectly imperfect and that's just perfect, right? ;-) Leela is a great resource for beginners as well because it is just flat out the sweetest eye and ear candy I've seen and heard for meditation. In actuality, it is the composite of all the features of Leela that make it so awesome. The price is no more expensive than other Wii games so if want this kind of program for a game system, be ready to pay game system prices. Plus, you have more flexibility on a game system than you would have on a DVD. To me personally, it's well worth the regular game system price that it retails for. I'd rather pay $40 for Leela that will benefit me physically, mentally and spiritually on a more steady basis than pay $10 on DVD's that I'll get tired of in no time, OR $40 or more a week for personal training. I'd go with Leela any day. :-)

I'm so glad that Deepak Chopra has created such a fun and user friendly meditation program. This program fills a very needed void and I really hope that it will be the spark that turns more people on to the mental, physical and spiritual health benefits of meditation which have been substantiated by peer-reviewed research by very reliable sources. I encourage you to investigate this for yourself. You don't have to take my word for it. The proof is waiting to be found.

What I'm now looking forward to is seeing this program/app/game on the iPhone and the Nintendo DS/3DS. ;-)

Thank you for creating and offering Leela, Deepak Chopra. It is a great gift from a truly wonderful soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars enchanted! January 5, 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
(This review is for the Wii version).

I received "Leela" as a gift over the holidays and I am absolutely *enchanted*. And I don't use that word often, at least not for the things that pertain to me.

Leela consists of several series of "mini-games" (so to speak)- each set of games makes up a sequence. For instance, the first series of games asks you to help fill a slowly spinning planet (which you control) with trees, mushrooms, grass, and energy. As you help your little planet come to lifeyou are given more elements to add to the planet- mountains, volcanoes, clouds. It's a tiny bit challenging the first time you play, and maybe not completely mindful, but as you get used to the movements, and the way in which you use the Wiimote, you sort of settle into this mindfulness about it all- your mind clears so that you focus on the game, but not enough to *stress* about the game. It's enough to keep your focus but not enough to force an emotional response.

Everything is gentle, but NOTHING is boring.

I started meditating regularly about a year ago, and the last few months have been a bit of a challenge for me. Leela came at a perfect time- after playing the very first time, I felt like I had done a 20-minute meditation. I came out of the experience feeling relaxed, refreshed, and in a good place, so to speak.

I've read that the XBOX version is much more "integrative" that it can sense your breathing and subtle movements and that's how you guide the game. The Wii game isn't like that, but with some patience, you can truly use the Wiimote to sync the movement with your breath. Learning how to use the Wiimote in this game seems to be an exercise in mindfulness itself, but with regular play, you notice that your movements slow down, your breath becomes deeper, and the game sort of works in harmony with your body.

I'm very happy with Leela and I really can't wait to sit down and play every evening. An unexpected bonus is that my six year old loves it, too- she's created her own mandala and has worked through several of the sequences (including ones that I have not made my own way through yet) and her experience with it is also "enchanting", but completely different- she excels at some of the series that I find a bit more challenging, etc, and she finds different aspects of the game addictive. I like that- Leela is an individual experience.

And the music and graphics are STUNNING. Everything is so beautiful. A BIG and unexpected treat is that Elena Brower narrates the game- she's a yoga teacher in NY and I know her from her "Mindful Smack" video blogs. Her voice is perfect for this game.

Leela makes me feel like a little kid, in a way- I've discovered a world of peace and color and sound and I can access it whenever I want.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Experience; Needs a Few Tweaks February 17, 2012
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Leela is a very exceptional game - it's a game that helps you learn meditation, stress release, and calm. The type of game we can all appreciate!

The "play" side of Leela is about mini-games. You have a game where an earth turns and you try to plant trees and mushrooms, getting them to benefit from day and night. There are air currents to ride, curving tunnels to ride in, eggs to connect to nests, and air hoops to ride through. In each case the game has multiple levels to keep challenging you. I appreciate greatly that they have a tutorial for each set and also that they ramp up slowly. All levels of players can enjoy the games as a result.

Each game matches up with a chakra. So the first is red and is about seeds and growing, the second is orange and is about nests, and so on. This chakra theme follows throughout the entire system.

I do have to note that, having played other "meditation" style games, I was hoping for more peaceful gameplay. Some of these games can be fairly stressful as you try to shoot falling boulders or whirling meteors in time. I would have expected more of a "musical relaxing" gameplay, not dodging dangerous items in swirling tunnels.

The other side of Leela is the meditative side. There is guided meditation and silent meditation. For guided you can go up to 17 minutes - but as the system will end a period with the music simply continuing forever, until you press a button, you can extend that to as long as you wish. Again each meditation matches with a chakra. On silent meditation, it's simply 2 minutes to infinite and while it's called "silent" you can actually choose from a range of sounds as well as the aforementioned silence. You get a gong to begin, one to end, and the screen plays the mini-game associated with that chakra.

There is an "oracle" which gives you generic, open-ended responses when you press a button. There's also "ambiance" which simply plays a background with visuals and music - perhaps a nice background visual for your TV if you're having a quiet party.

You can choose your own mandala to represent your profile, but I was disappointed with how limited the options are. You can only tweak the base design very minimally.

The graphics in general are beautiful, and I love the chime-like noises that sound when you run your cursor over menu screens. It's very soothing. On the other hand, the music is sometimes intrusive. The audio mix is generally good but certainly not always ideal. Also, the way they have the game load, it sometimes whirs loudly right in the middle of meditation. I'm sure they could have pre-loaded the content to avoid that; I don't see that issue in other games I play.

Having played through all levels of all the mini-games, they're not fun enough to really go back and delve into them repeatedly. So primarily I keep this in the system to meditate each evening. However, the process of starting the meditation is fairly lengthy. Launch the game. Go into start. Choose your profile (otherwise only the shortest meditation will be unlocked). Choose reflect. Choose stillness. Choose guided. There should be an easier way to just jump there. And I do wish there was a longer option than 17 minutes for a guided meditation. Surely the disc could have held longer items in there.

Still, I do enjoy using the meditation; it's far more organized than for example a DVD of meditation is. If they come out with a fresh version, hopefully they can address some of these issues.

I have full documented details about all the meditations; they won't fit in this review here, but feel free to contact me for details.
