RAZOR REEL Review, September 17, 2007
"The Deepening" is the latest release from Wicked Dreams & Allied Horror. A movie about a traumatised fireman who turns serial killer!
"The Deepening" tells the story of a troubled New York fireman (Ted Alderman) who suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder from working on the ruins of the WTC towers after the tragic terrorist events of 9-11. In search of a fresh start, he relocates to a small fire department in a quiet rural town. He seeks treatment by Doctor Chambers (Gunnar Hansen) for his recurring nightmares. The bad dreams, however, do not subside. Instead, they turn into a terrifying reality as the population of the town begins to sharply decrease.
The movie is done with a distinctive 70's slasher feeling. Add to that a lot of gratuitous nudity, a handful of macho cops, an axe yielding murderer, chopped off body parts and gallons of fake blood and you know exactly what you're in for. Featuring Gunnar Hansen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Murder-Set-Pieces, The Demon Lover), Debbie Rochon (Santa Claws, Nothing Sacred, American Nightmare) and Debbie D (Hayride Slaughter, the ghost of Angela Webb) as willing victims and also starring Jim O'Rear (Skarecrow, Wolfsbayne, Dorm of the dead, Seaquest DSV) and Martial Arts master Ted Alderman (Dead Last, Wolfsbayne) as the main stars. Both Ted & Jim worked on the story, that seems to be based on actual events, they both shared the directors seat, as well.
While "The Deepening" is not a film for a big audience (and was probably never intended to be), the movie has definitely something to offer the die-hard fans of independent flicks and B-movies.
The film pays, intentionally or unintentionally, tribute to those American flicks from an era long gone. A perfect mix of the slasher genre with a who dun'it, topped with macho ingredients that are easily compared with the attitude you could only fid in blacksploitation films. Think Doris Wishman on a Monday morning. The inclusion of live footage on the Twin Towers gave it even a little Mondo feel...Nice treatment!
However what it lacks on originality and quality, it gains on independency. The film truly shines as an independent feature. Done with a micro budget and a small cast and crew, this movie walks from one cliché to another without being boring. A killing shower scene, a axe towing masked murderer having a taste for girls, a couple killed by the campfire and so on. The scenes follow each other in high tempo. If this was the mid seventies it would have been a true drive-in classic.

Ambitious Amateur Hour, April 10, 2008
I would like to agree with the two reviews I've read on this site for The Deepening. After all, I bought the film based on those critiques. However, although the movie was certainly ambitious and had some 70s/80s-slasher-movie-throwback charm, I found it to be completely amateurish in its direction, writing, acting and overall execution. The violence and gore were not well-staged and I found it incredibly difficult to believe that the hero, played by a bald goofy dude, could score all kinds of attractive women. Quibbling aside, the movie just WAS NOT GOOD. I predicted the ending about ten minutes in, and couldn't count the number of rip-offs(homages?) present on both hands. I felt like I was watching a movie by some good ol' boys who found a movie camera and decided to spend the weekend making a flick-on-the-fly. But, like I said, it did have its charms in a way. There was some (unintentionally?) funny dialogue, and I got the sense that the guys making this thing were having a blast. So, if you're looking for some no-brainer type stuff to fill a couple of hours with your beer-drinking buddies, this can be pretty fun fodder!

DO NOT BUY THIS, April 20, 2008
Can you give negative stars? This was and is absolutely THE WORST movie I have ever seen. Plan Nine from Outer Space had more plot. DO NOT BUY THIS movie unless you want to waste your money. I bought this movie because of the previous positive reviews. If you like poor film quality, gratuitous T&A, bad acting and cheap effects then this film is for you.
