5.0 out of 5 stars For the person who is serious about knowing God., May 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Deeper Experiences Of Famous Christians (Paperback)
This reader-friendly composite of biographical sketches is directed to the person who is not satisfied with nominal Christian living. The author points directly to each biographee's source of spiritual renewal and/or completion, i.e, the Holy Spirit, and subsequent effects. An interesting aspect of this work is its transdenominational nature; no particular sect is endorsed, though many are included by virtue of their highlighted adherants. If the reader is honestly interested in a closer walk with God, this book will provide plenty of inspiration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Encouragement, December 21, 2008

This book was a great encouragement to me and reminded me that God is still here and still speaks. What He has done for others, He can and will do in a heart that is surrendered to Him. Some of the stories were of people whom I didn't know about, and others were reminders of how He worked with great power through some more well known Christians. All of the stories were encouraging and challenging. When I finished I picked up Thomas A Kempis' book "Imitation of Christ"...seemed like a good way to meditate on God's work in others & how it might become more personal for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Inspiration Stories But Theological Lacking, November 19, 2004
This review is from: Deeper Experiences Of Famous Christians (Paperback)
I was given this book as a young Christian and easily devoured every word of it. The stories in Lawson's book are awesome. You will be encouraged as you read about the faith and hunger men and women had for the presence of God in their lives. None of the people in the book were satisfied with simply living for Jesus but they wanted to make a divine impact for the kingdom upon the earth. From John the Baptist to John Wesley to many unknowns as well you will read the stories of various Christian experiences in God's presence that transformed their lives.

My one drawback as I look back at this book is the theology of the book. Simply put (as one reviewer put it before me): there is none. Lawson simply tells the stories of the various believers experiences. The book leaves the impression that the Christian life is simply one experience after another or that a Christian needs one "mighty" Holy Ghost experience and that is it. The daily discipleship is lost (Luke 9:23-26). Further, not all experiences should be outright declared from God. We must test our experiences by the Scriptures (1 Thess. 5:21; 1 John 4:1). Doctrine is important (1 Timothy 4:16; Titus 2:1) and we must not allow experiences to become the true test of Christianity (2 Cor. 13:5).

Get this book. Read it and most of all, open your Bible and test everything you read by the truth of God's Word (John 17:17).

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good BUT, December 16, 2010

I really like this books . I qouls deff recommend this book to anyone who is interested in The holy Spirit and great men of God. It's a really nice book and it talks about the different experiences that were experienced by different me of God and how that one experience with the Holy spirit changed their lives and ministry forever. It will deff create hunger in you , because you would want to find , touch, seek, have what they had. I think this book is prettty basic . The biographies are not too extensive which is good but at the same time if you are looking for a biography of the people in this book you won't find it. You will find a little summary of their biography but not a well extensive biography. So if you're looking for a quick read you should deff get this book. I would usually read one little biography each day. As i said if you want to know all about George Muller, or Charles finney look somewhere else. But if you just want to know the story of their one time experince with the holy Spirit then this is the book for you.
