One of the most intoxicating albums ever,

This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
This is one of Tiamats best albums and their most diverse. I hear a lot of comparisions to Pink Floyd. While I agree, I think this release is more inspired by Tiamat themselves. Melodic solo's fly with swirling keyboards. Hard-edged guitar's and deep warm vocals. As far as originality goes, no band has anything on Tiamat. I think this album, along with Judas Christ and Skeleton Skeletron are the best, but this album has a spark all its own. If you like bands like Type O Negative or The Cure but can delve into foreign territories(sitars, oboe's)then this album is for you. This is NOT commercial music. If you have heard of them consider yourself lucky. Fantastic album. Get it.

Intelligent, Creative, and Essential TIAMAT music.,
By King "Carcossa" (U.S.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
As a band, TIAMAT is continously evolving. Wildhoney seems to be the favorite of this band's albums and there's nothing incorrect with that. A Deeper Kind of Slumber is a considerable work as well. If you only enjoy HEAVY TIAMAT music read no further. If you appreciate the development that Edlund has undergone you can appreciate this album. Overall the album contains more synthesized music than their previous guitar riff'd albums. Edlund's vocals are deep and poignant. His lyrics deliver subtle AND strong ideas. This album involves the use of the keyboard, the theremin, violin, cello, flute, obeo and the citar. This experimental album is rich in it's musical resources, and can be appreciated for that in and of itself. The opener "Cold Seed" is a strong song with powerful guitars, and delivers the most "punch" guitar-wise on the album. Edlund cleverly melds songs together such as TEONANCATL, and Trillion Zillion Centipedes, as he has done previously. "Atlantis as a Lover", is an extremely powerful song and entertains the listener with it's poetic content and mild manner. "Only in My Tears it Lasts" begins with a industrial "poppy" edge, but delivers wonderfully with its lyrics and eventual soothing atmosphere. "The Whores of Babylon" is just as powerful and brutal as "Cold Seed", but it accomplishes this through it's industrial power and strong beat. In "Mount Marilyn", and "A Deeper Kind of Slumber", it is easy to see how Edlund draws inspiration from Floyd, and yet the style is still one of his own. Grab a copy of "A Deeper Kind of Slumber", listen to it, enjoy it, dissect it, appreciate it, and if you can...listen to "Atlantis As A Lover," on the beach near the ocean!

A Brilliant Slumber,
By Ravi S. Madapati (California, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
This is the first introduction I got to Tiamat. When I heard this album gifted to me by my brother, I was shocked. It was like nothing I heard till then considering I already heard 100+ metal/rock bands. To give a vague discription, this album sounds like Pink Floyd + Metallica. Its hard, deep and agonizing. The production is good. If you are looking for an album to just head bang to, dont buy this. If you are looking for great music that you could listen to when you are feeling down, get this stuff. Johan voice is soothing. Lyrics are ok but the music is just great. Every single track from COLD SEED to the tittle track are just incredible. If almost impossible to articulate your feelings when you hear music like this. If you enjoy sorrow (A paradoxical feeling which is common to fans like of bands like Tiamat,Paradise Lost etc) you will love this album. It nothing like you heard before. Unlike the follow ups like Skeleton, Judas, this album is atmospheric. In a dark room, play this album loud, sit all by yourself and close your eyes...What else do you want in life?
