5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most intoxicating albums ever
This is one of Tiamats best albums and their most diverse. I hear a lot of comparisions to Pink Floyd. While I agree, I think this release is more inspired by Tiamat themselves. Melodic solo's fly with swirling keyboards. Hard-edged guitar's and deep warm vocals. As far as originality goes, no band has anything on Tiamat. I think this album, along with Judas Christ and...

A Deeper Kind of Slumber is a different experience from Wildhoney. This album is morose, experimental, and atmospheric. It's not anything like a metal album. There's quite a bit of synth playing throughout, but this disc isn't rough and full of guitar riffs. As for the songs, "Cold Seed" is the opener and the heaviest of the album. I think this album, along with Judas Christ and Skeleton Skeletron are the best, but this album has a spark all its own. If you like bands like Type O Negative or The Cure but can delve into foreign territories(sitars, oboe's)then this album is for you. This is NOT commercial music. If you have heard of them consider yourself lucky. Fantastic album. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, Creative, and Essential TIAMAT music., May 22, 2002
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
As a band, TIAMAT is continously evolving. Wildhoney seems to be the favorite of this band's albums and there's nothing incorrect with that. A Deeper Kind of Slumber is a considerable work as well. If you only enjoy HEAVY TIAMAT music read no further. If you appreciate the development that Edlund has undergone you can appreciate this album. Overall the album contains more synthesized music than their previous guitar riff'd albums. Edlund's vocals are deep and poignant. His lyrics deliver subtle AND strong ideas. This album involves the use of the keyboard, the theremin, violin, cello, flute, obeo and the citar. This experimental album is rich in it's musical resources, and can be appreciated for that in and of itself. The opener "Cold Seed" is a strong song with powerful guitars, and delivers the most "punch" guitar-wise on the album. Edlund cleverly melds songs together such as TEONANCATL, and Trillion Zillion Centipedes, as he has done previously. "Atlantis as a Lover", is an extremely powerful song and entertains the listener with it's poetic content and mild manner. "Only in My Tears it Lasts" begins with a industrial "poppy" edge, but delivers wonderfully with its lyrics and eventual soothing atmosphere. "The Whores of Babylon" is just as powerful and brutal as "Cold Seed", but it accomplishes this through it's industrial power and strong beat. In "Mount Marilyn", and "A Deeper Kind of Slumber", it is easy to see how Edlund draws inspiration from Floyd, and yet the style is still one of his own. Grab a copy of "A Deeper Kind of Slumber", listen to it, enjoy it, dissect it, appreciate it, and if you can...listen to "Atlantis As A Lover," on the beach near the ocean!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Slumber, June 1, 2003
By
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
This is the first introduction I got to Tiamat. When I heard this album gifted to me by my brother, I was shocked. It was like nothing I heard till then considering I already heard 100+ metal/rock bands. To give a vague discription, this album sounds like Pink Floyd + Metallica. Its hard, deep and agonizing. The production is good. If you are looking for an album to just head bang to, dont buy this. If you are looking for great music that you could listen to when you are feeling down, get this stuff. Johan voice is soothing. Lyrics are ok but the music is just great. Every single track from COLD SEED to the tittle track are just incredible. If almost impossible to articulate your feelings when you hear music like this. If you enjoy sorrow (A paradoxical feeling which is common to fans like of bands like Tiamat,Paradise Lost etc) you will love this album. It nothing like you heard before. Unlike the follow ups like Skeleton, Judas, this album is atmospheric. In a dark room, play this album loud, sit all by yourself and close your eyes...What else do you want in life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting , atmospheric metal ?, May 23, 2005
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
While I'm not a metalhead , I do enjoy some of the fine music of the metal world.I recently listened to this cd and is certainly one of a kind. It's like a haunting, soothing , melancholic, psycodellic , atmospheric feeling. I've heard Tiamat's other cd's which, although highly rated, lack the emotion and tension of this gem. I recommend listening to this cd in those moments when you want to sit alone, gaze at the heavens , feel the wind blowing in your skin and let your mind travel to a deeper kind of slumber...

5.0 out of 5 stars Underestimated, September 3, 2007
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
I bought this cd over ten years ago, and just popped it in again having not paid attention to it for some time.

It has a timeless quality, and a darker version of Pink Floyd is not an unfair nor unwarranted comparison. I was a huge fan of industrial back when I bought this album, and it managed--not--to fit neatly into any given category of industrial or metal. It was too subtle really, for either category. Mood-wise, if anyone remembers Ministry's "Dream Song" from the "Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" album, this whole album creates a melancholy reminiscent of that song, without the horror type theme.

It's incredibly atmospheric, and it sculpts a mood like no other cd in my collection. Very dreamlike. I can think of no other bands that sound like Tiamat... Katatonia (just a little bit) type-O (but nowhere near as deep and low as Peter Steele). They really achieved an unparalleled sound with this record and it belongs in your collection.

Now having rediscovered this great band I must mine the discography...

5.0 out of 5 stars All good in their own ways, November 18, 1999
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
Tiamat started off with a very heavy and loud approach to the music scene. People who liked them back then hate them now. I don't understand why. Their music becomes more and more talented and better sounding with each album. This one is a very well produced album. It is the most ambient sounding of them all. Track 7 is a very strange turn for Tiamat, but I like it. It has kind of a Gypsy sound to it. This album is definately worth a listen.

This is the best tiamat album ever. The songs are so melodic and emotional. The album title corresponds exactly to the music inside. Be prepared for a wonderful journey in another dimension.....

3.0 out of 5 stars Morose and experimental., April 18, 2000
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
A Deeper Kind of Slumber is a different experience from Wildhoney. This album is morose, experimental, and atmospheric. It's not anything like a metal album. There's quite a bit of synth playing throughout, but this disc isn't rough and full of guitar riffs. As for the songs, "Cold Seed" is the opener and the heaviest of the album. The synth intro to it is really cool. I mostly just like parts from different songs instead of whole tracks. There are various instruments utilized throughout A Deeper Kind of Slumber: violins and cellos, for example. "Four Leary Biscuits" is an interesting song, particularly because of the sitar that is played on it (The tune is very different and experimental.). "Kite" is a nice-sounding instrumental too. The song I like the most is "Only in My Tears it Lasts." It's very attractive and eccentric-sounding. "The Whores of Babylon" surprises me more than anything else. It strongly resembles Depeche Mode both musically and vocally. The singer sings differently throughout the songs--I like his vocals better on Wildhoney. One song that I don't like is "Mount Marilyn." It's a tune that plods on for too long. This album is quite morose and not very heavy (I do like the experimentation though.). This is good for cloudy weather. A Deeper Kind of Slumber is good, but I think that Wildhoney is a better representation of Tiamat.

5.0 out of 5 stars just a Masterpice, Tiamat's crown jewel, March 3, 2002

M Flamman (Breda, the Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Deeper Kind of Slumber (Audio CD)
This is for a lot of metalfans a disappointing cd, for it is too soft or slow. But be aware: this music is addicting, very addicting; like lsd or a mushroom-experience! What's the case? This cd let us experience Tiamat's (or better: Johan Edlund's) deepest, darkest emotions and his experiences with harddrugs. The songs on this cd are hypnotical, repetitive, hypnotizing the listener in such a manner that the only thing the listener can do is: press the repeatbutton and listen to it again, and again, and... This is my favourite cd (together with In The Woods's Strange in Stereo)and is best listened to when you are drugged a little bit. Listen to all the songs, for this is one of the very few cd's in which the cd get's better if the end is nearing: the last three songs are maybe the best songs (especially Phantasma De Luxe and Mount Marilyn). And listen to it more than five times, for you will discover new sounds every time, even after two years and 100 listenings...Enjoy the experience!
