4.0 out of 5 stars Seclusion & Seduction, October 4, 2004
By
This review is from: Deeper (Audio CD)
Rutgers' grad Pete Belasco was in a boating accident that broke both of his hands and caused him to focus on writing and vocal development that resulted in his superb first disc "Get It Together." That set 7 years ago boasted four of my favorites, "All I Want," "All in My Mind," "Love Train" & "Dirty Deed." "Deeper" does move a bit deeper into seclusion and seduction. Belasco has a way of making the most private and intimate feelings musical. If there's a flaw in this disc, it's a bit more variety in tempos and melody as a certain sameness seems to set in. However, that is small complaint as this is a richly textured work. From the first track, "Hurry Hurry" where Belasco's sax melts like butter on the warm smooth surface of love, "Havin' a ball baby," he sings. The title track oozes charm with Belasco's high-pitched vocals weaving a sexy spell. "No, no, relax, lie back, I'm all for you," Pete croons on the ultra-sexy "I'll Come to You." "Crazy" boasts a beautiful melody on this instrumental that grows in its lush beauty -- a standout track. The CD concludes with two shorter tracks. "Zoe," his daughter, is a haunting and reflective melody. "People Ask Me" is the closest to the energy of his first CD. This second set by Pete Belasco is all the sweeter after 7 years! For those just encountering him through this disc, you will want his earlier one too. This set shows growth and variety and is lovely and sweet. Enjoy!

One of the most beautiful smooth records of the last 5 years. I wonder what Verve Records will think of this new cd...Pete Belasco is xtra cool. I never write reviews but this cd just got to my heart and SOUL!!! Tonight put aside the Jazz Messengers and the MJQ and invite your baby to have dinner with you and Mr Belasco.

This review is from: Deeper (Audio CD)
Wow, the instant I heard Pete Belasco's sultry voice, I immediately wanted to turn off all the lights, light some candles, and start the bath water. This whole cd has that effect. Perfect for a quiet evening at home with your lover. This cd will definitely make all the stress go away. It's the essence of sexy. So if you're a person who's looking for a mood-setting cd, look no further. Pete Belasco will have you floating in the clouds all night.

5.0 out of 5 stars He could be the next Curtis Mayfield!!!???, July 25, 2004

I am in love with this CD; at first when I heard his voice I thought it was like an unreleased Curtis Mayfield album. Then I looked it was a fresh new face. I definately have to get his first album ~Get it Together~ to hear the foundation of a great artist. I will definately look forward to more albums from Mr. Belasco. My favorite cuts other than the title track ~Deeper~ are ~Hurry, Hurry~ ,~Too Close~ and a dedication to one of his little girls ~Nia~. You go boy a latino with much soul represent papi!

4.0 out of 5 stars Too Smooth, May 3, 2004
By
This review is from: Deeper (Audio CD)
Vocal jazz has now been categorized with a "neo" signifier, almost watering down this complicated art form. Smooth Jazz has been called by some, "R&B without the vocals" which dums down a skillful craft. But Pete Belasco gives the kiss of life to the headphones of the listener with his sophomore effort entitled "Deeper," and the rabbit hole does just that. Going from one smooth extreme to another with a falsetto coaxing enough for repeat appearances on a smooth jazz request line, the album goes throwback on you. Such songs as "Hurry, Hurry" and the title track "Deeper" will have you feeling like you were the coolest thing with air conditioning while driving.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well-kept secret surprise & a very good cd!, October 23, 2005

I bought Belasco's "Deeper" on a whim, having never heard his music and based solely on a friend's recommendation. I like it a lot. Upon hearing the first track, I immediately thought of Curtis Mayfield, and then later read Belasco's liner notes where he credits Mayfield and the Isley Brothers; and their influences definitely come through in Belasco's music. He's effective as a vocal and instrumental soloist.

What I really liked about this cd is it's ability to "play well with others". When I want to shuffle 4-5 cds together, Belasco's "Deeper" mixes well with newer artists such as Joss Stone and Kem; or another mix with some old-school Ramsey Lewis and Roberta Flack. Also, Belasco's instrumental tracks nicely complemented other cds like Joyce Cooling and Walter Beasley.

Belasco's "Deeper" is like a fresh sound that you know you've heard before. And it's like hearing it again-- for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Candlelight, Wine and a Full Moon setting on the beach., May 30, 2004
This review is from: Deeper (Audio CD)
Pete Belasco's latest effort is by far the one of the best cd's I've heard in some time. His voice has a nice Maxwell and Marvin Gaye falsetto. This cd is definately for those late nite quiet storm evenings. I thorougly enjoyed the whole cd, but in particular tracks # 1,3,6 and 10. I highly recommend this cd for those listeners with discriminating taste. Sit back, relax and have a nice glass "Deeper".

Bought this sight unseen, (or in this case, unheard), simply based upon Get It Together, which in my opinion is one of the best albums ever. I would travel hundreds of miles to see Pete Belasco live...so Pete, please tour!!
