A Deeper Surrender
Notes on a Spiritual Life
Stuart Perrin

"When a human being's happy , he or she has learned everything to be learned on earth." No gift of material wealth, beauty, power , fame , intelligence, or ability can create happiness; only a spirit that remains open, constantly surrendering enlightenment in order to become more enlightened. According to Stuart Perrin, there are no rules to leading a spiritual life; it is unique to every individual, and what works for one person may not work for another. A student of Rudi (the late Swami Rudrananda), one of the great American spiritual masters, Perrin shares his most transformative experiences and offers deeply profound and practical wisdom for daily living.

- A perennial review of the paradoxes and pitfalls of having a spiritual life

- How to transform the stress of modern living into a liberating spiritual force

- Common sense guidance for everyday spiritual practice

- A straightforward question-and-answer, open-to-any-page style that is ideal for people on the go

More About the Author

Stuart Perrin was born in New York City on August 10, 1942. At the age of sixteen he began a search for a teacher who could direct his creative energies on a spiritual path. He studied literature, philosophy, acting and wrote poems of a visionary nature. He lived a bohemian life in Europe and Africa until his twenty-fifth birthday when circumstances forced him to return to the States. It was at that time that he met Rudi (Albert Rudolph) in New York City. Mr. Perrin became a disciple of Rudi's, and their relationship grew closer over the years. They were together at the time of Rudi's death in 1973 in an airplane crash. "I never felt he had gone. If I wish to be with him, to learn from him, I just open my heart. He is there. Sitting. Smiling. Sharing his teachings."

His studies with Rudi gave Mr. Perrin a deep insight into how meditation and inner work could help a human being find a method whereby it is possible to live in the world and be free of it at the same time.

Stuart is a long-time writer and author of five books and many essays, both fiction and non-fiction, weaving his understanding of inner work and affairs of the heart with equal dexterity.

Stuart has a meditation center in New York City where he offers classes, lectures, and meditation retreat intensives around the country. He has many students throughout the United States, Europe, Israel and Brazil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Yet Practical Guide To Happiness!, April 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Deeper Surrender: Notes on a Spiritual Life (Paperback)
Stuart Perrin is one of the world's best kept secrets. He is a highly evolved American spiritual master who transmits enormous energy and makes the most profound mystical teachings accessible and applicable to our day-to-day lives. This book (and the teachings contained it) have transformed my life beyond recognition. With humor, common sense, and concrete, practical tools, Perrin shows us in "Deeper Surrender" how to take full responsibility for our lives and transform all of life's tensions, problems and difficulties into food for our growth and greater happiness. By showing us the power of surrender and opening our hearts, Perrin gives the greatest gift of all -- he shows us how to love ourselves and others unconditionally, and how to be what we already are: Truly divine human beings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meditation from a broad perspective, June 11, 2001
By
Christine Lorenz (Eugene, Oregon, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Deeper Surrender: Notes on a Spiritual Life (Paperback)
Reading this book is like peeling an onion.....a very interesting onion at that. This book discusses meditation in a practical, down to earth and juicy way -- and it is the first book I have underlined in for a long time! It is easy to read and yet tells it like it is in strong language. Stuart Perrin has obviously done his work, comes from a deep heart space, and yet shares with us in a "no holds barred" kind of way. Whenever I read from it (and I read both whole chapters and "open it to any page" type of reading), I feel inspired to work on my spiritual life without feeling overwhelmed. I would recommend this to any student of meditation -- both curious beginner or serious student. I have bought several for gifts for a broad range of people.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Deeper Surrender, February 9, 2003
This review is from: A Deeper Surrender: Notes on a Spiritual Life (Paperback)
Stuart Perrin has devoted his life to teaching people "how to use the stress and tension of everyday living and transform it into a life-giving spiritual force." A Deeper Surrender, his fifth book, details his personal transformational experiences and provides guidance to others seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Many people think they are ready for spiritual growth, but few are prepared to do the inner work necessary to achieve it, according to Perrin. He feels that regular meditation is essential, and explains how the energy generated by meditation can be used to activate life-giving forces.

Perrin emphasizes that "a spiritual life denies us nothing, not family, friendships, business, leisure, success, nor any other of life's abundant treasures. It just gives it all perspective." Living a spiritual life, however, is for many a step into the unknown, and he discusses the fears that can keep people from taking that step.

He learned how to overcome his own fears and hesitations from Swami Rudrananda (Rudi) and has continued teaching those lessons to his own students. Perrin says that everyone needs a teacher, but that a teacher or guru is just that, not someone to be worshiped. True to ancient wisdom, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

Perrin defines surrender as "a state of openness that carries us from moment to moment in life that allows us to let go of attachments and evolve to higher states of consciousness." He makes a clear distinction between rejection and surrender. Surrender has nothing to do with walking away from the responsibilities of daily life.

Perrin's teachings are based on several themes, including "total surrender to God, the development of the chakra system and awakening of the kundalini force," and transformation. A Deeper Surrender provides guidance needed for those desiring to lead a more spiritual life based on these themes.
