Book Description

Women Talk About Series July 19, 2001

This book is a collection of the stories of thirty women of all ages and backgrounds who have experienced or have recovered from depression. Its narrative of courage weaves together the pain of the fight against depression with the wisdom that comes from surviving and overcoming the disorder. The accounts in the book describe the kinds of psychological traps that keep women in the hold of depression. They offer solid advice about what women need to get over an episode and avoid depression in the future. Together with insights from the latest research, the book includes an analysis of the most successful depression treatment strategies, a comprehensive description of current medications and the alternatives to them, and self-assessment questions at the end of each chapter help you begin thinking about your own depression experience.

"Thoughtfully written advice on how to deal when people start calling you 'ma'am' instead of 'miss.' Funny, refreshingly direct, and tremendously helpful."
-Jancee Dunn, "Rolling Stone"

"This is an important book for any woman facing thirty-something years whether she's close to thirty or still trying to make sense of what happened when thirty hit. I only wish I'd had the comforting companionship of this book when I was 'facing 30.'"
-Laurel Harris Durenberger, publisher/editor, "The Urbanite"

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"This eloquent book is a gift to women who know what it means to be depressed--and to those who care about them. It's filled with insight, good advice, and moving firsthand accounts that will leave every reader feeling more connected and less alone."

-Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., author of The Dance of Anger

"In order to break the deafening silence and erase the stigma surrounding depression, we must not only speak, we must speak truth to power. The various stories chronicled in Lauren Dockett's insightful book, The Deepest Blue, do exactly that. They prove once again that while medical science may offer life-saving treatments for this mysterious sadness and pain, it is always the love, compassion and experiential wisdom of others that will truly inspire, revive and, ultimately, save the human spirit."

-Meri Nana-Ama Danquah, author of Willow Weep for Me: A Black Woman's Journey Through Depression

"This validating and informative book is filled with the "lived" experiences of women from all walks of life. The discovery that your experience is shared by others--that you are not alone--is so helpful. Add to that lots of supporting documentation that will guide you on your journey to recovery, and any woman who has experienced depression, or anyone who has provided a depressed woman with loving care, would benefit from reading this book."

-Mary Ellen Copeland, author of The Depression Workbook and Living Without Depression and Manic Depression

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of stories and substance, October 10, 2001

This review is from: The Deepest Blue: How Women Face and Overcome Depression (Paperback)
I have had more than one bout of clinical depression in my life, and I find that the way I feel so isolated from others is one of the hardest things to deal with. When I saw this book I liked the concept, and what I found was that the many different stories from women who deal with depression were a great help. It's not always easy to find other women who are willing to discuss this issue with you, so it was a real relief to read their words on the page.
The author writes well and I appreciated the way she took on the various sides of depression and today's treatments, like the drugs and the therapies, as a journalist would--objectively.
Also, the book is smallish, which means just right in size for someone who's depressed and might not be able to concentrate all that well.
I highly recommend it.
