Book Description

August 1995
In eastern California, four hours north of Los Angeles, lies a long, trough-shaped valley bordered on either side by massive mountain ranges. Valley and mountains together form a region of superlatives. Here you will find our highest peak outside Alaska, Mount Whitney; the oldest of all living things, the bristlecone pine; and our deepest valley, the Owens. Completely revised after fifteen years of additional research, this cherished guide is now back in print, thirty-three years after its original publication. The book contains thirty pages of photographs by America's premiere landscape photographers; rare historic photographs; drawings of wildflowers, trees, birds, and mammals, as well as a road and trail map, geologic and mountain drawings, old mining, and railroad maps.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

If you're continuing your journey up California's eastern Sierra Nevadas, consider Genny Smith's companion book, Mammoth Lakes Sierra.

From the Author

In this second edition, a wealth of new information has been incorporated since Deepest Valley's publication over thirty years ago. The back country hasn't changed, but roads to trailheads have changed considerably. The Sierra is still granite, but the theory about how the granite formed is much different now, as Paul Bateman explains. Another significant change in this edition is Greg James's explanation of recent developments in the Inyo County / Los Angeles Department of Water and Power controversy over groundwater export -- a story that is not yet finished. We also couldn't resist adding Hal Klieforth's new chapter on climate. The chapters on birds and mammals have been greatly enlarged. Thanks to Mary DeDecker, all plant names conform with the Jepson Manual. Phil Pister has added pages on native fishes, and Peggy Gray, a local Bishop artist, has created beautiful drawings, while Forest Service artist Mary Ambrose contributed a new road and trail map.

This review is from: Deepest Valley: A Guide to Owens Valley, Its Roadsides and Mountain Trails (Paperback)
As a long time visiter to the Owens Valley I found this book to be excellent. Its great for the first time traveler or the person who has been to the valley many times. Its section on side roads is good for those passing through the area and wanting to explore a bit. The history and geology areas are current and answer those questions that arise when encountering the vast numbers of different geological features. While no one guide does it all this book comes close. A great book for those who want a general guide to the valley, its history, geology, flora and fauna.
