Poetry at its very best...,
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Paperback)
I finished the book this morning....literally couldn't put it down. Breathtaking. Engaging. Funny. Horrific. All-so-true. The eliptical style and interweaving of conversations come to a heartbreaking and honest conclusion. I began rereading it immediately once I reached the end, and felt the solidity in the confluence of voices apparent from the first page. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.... I can only rave. CD is able to (believe it, it's true) sustain tension, warmth, humor, and heartbreak through this epic to the very end. CD's writing is definitely "of the earth" grounded in the physical as well as in the spiritual. The book: a single poem is worthy of the highest acclaim and prizes.... This book is destined to be a classic.

"blur in, blur out"...wright's illuminating language,
By jean (somewhere she'd rather not be) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Paperback)
wright's "deepstep come shining" reads like flickers of light directly from the soul. rays of repetitive imagery and strange nudges of powerful sensation provide for a truly fascinating and poetically stimulating experience. anyone who is in love with the english language should take a look at this book. although it may be difficult if you are a fan of plots and storylines, the patches of nerve-tingling word combinations will be quite satisfying. wright weaves in combinations and unexpected relationships between places/objects/sensations like no one else. also, if you've seen the movie "smoke," this'll make you start a whole new analytical journey of wonder...:) enjoy...!

Absolutely Breathtaking,

CD Wright does the most amazing job at capturing her audience. Using elliptical thoughts and at times outlandish ideas, Deepstep is good to the last drop. When I read this I couldn't put it down and when I was done I had to read it again. I felt like each repeated image was a colorful thread and when all the threads were finally woven together they created this most amazing masterpiece. I recommend that if you like poetry at all, get this book, it's definately a keeper.

Amazing and intensely rich,
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Paperback)
I was completely enthralled with Wright's poetry from the moment I picked up this book. CD Wright creates an overflow of repeated images that make Deepstep a cohesive whole. Each poem has its individual merit, but they are not isolated or fragmented pieces. Instead they all work towards developing one continuous theme. CD Wright is clearly a talented poet. Her images are sometimes very confusing and disturbing, but I enjoyed Deepstep all the more because of that. This book can be read on many different levels and is a must have for any degree of poetry reader.

A beautiful set of pages to roll around in. I thank C.D. Wright for the car trip. Take it as half radio-play and half weird dream.

contemporary poetry at its best,
By "sannadillon" (DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Paperback)
This is a difficult book of poetry, but one well worth the challenge. Wright brings one into a world of language that trancends the ordinary...her words are haunting, and her vision is remarkable.

A way of putting things.,
By Sky Kiss Sea "Saynt" (Southern US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Hardcover)
Ms. Wright has a way of putting things that lends a pronouncedly unique voice to her poems and, admittedly, this works better at some points than at others. Probably not the best choice for people who expect poems to sound a certain way or follow a certain rhythm, but excellent for those whose interests extend beyond reading. Her work lends itself well to those who have interest in the play and possibility of word and phrase and atmosphere.

Rich and Strange,
By A Customer
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Paperback)
In this book length poem C.D. Wright navigates through the American South, both geographically and linguisticly. The result is a beautiful dark journey with powerful rhythms and imagery. One of the most consuming, pleasurable reads I've had.

Walking upon the Grave of Frank Stanford,
This review is from: Deepstep Come Shining (Paperback)
C.D. Wright was a "friend" of Frank Stanford before he took his own life. Frank Stanford's great masterpiece was "The Battlefield Where the Moon Says I love You." "Deepstep Come Shining," is a terrible rip-off of that poem, and because C.D. Wright is not a genius like Frank Stanford, she is unable to come close to carrying this off. The poetics are mired in bad prose, and the whole poem has a workshopped fakeness to it, and more so if you read her poem next to the overpowering genius of Stanford's.Read Frank Stanford's masterpiece. |
