Editorial Reviews

The film centers around retired police detective Derrick Stanswood (Mann), who is called by a successful doctor about an unsolved case involving his wife Maggy (Cottrel) and their son, Cole (newcomer Kevin Fennell). Chasing after loose ends in a backward rural town, Derrick has no idea that Maggy has been held captive for the past eight years by farmer Lukas Walton (K.J. Linhein, "Jebediah"), who is raising Cole as his own son in a wrongful world that holds its own horrors.

1.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fake reviews a good film do not make December 16, 2012
By Nexus 6
Got together with some friends and decided to get this based on the "reviews" this "film" got in Amazon. It was a big mistake.

Let me divide my review in two parts. First I'll talk about the movie itself, then about its 5 star rating it currently has in Amazon, and how that is possible.

The movie itself deserves no more than 1 1/2 stars. It is just plain bad. From the cinematography (did they shoot this in a $100 camera?) to the sound (very bad in some spots, like the conversation of the detective with the captain in the bar), to the editing and shot framing, it all feels very amateur. I have to say there are parts which are better than others (some of the acting is not too bad, and some of the dialog is actually acceptable, if very unequal and ridden with cliches).

The subject matter itself is nothing new, but the treatment is such that the movie is neither disturbing nor scary. The person that said this movie is like a descent into hell must have been smoking something or is just writing a glowing review for some other reason (more on this one later). The history lacks continuity. There are too many minor characters and side stories that go nowhere. The editing is awful, and I have the feeling many things are not shown in front of the camera because the director lacked the resources or know-how to make it believable enough to not be laughable (for example, the shot when the detective's wife falls down the stairs, and the scene when he discovers her body is uninentionally hilarious).

What really is strange is how such a bad movie could have such a high review in Amazon. The only conclusion is that many of these reviews are fake.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst of the Worst March 21, 2013
My friend and I rented this movie at the Redbox thinking it was going to be a great movie especially since on Amazon its rated 4 stars. Well it had to have been one of the worst movies I have seen. Horrible I dont want anybody to go through torture of how bad this movie is. We watched about 30 minutes thats all you can take.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible June 1, 2013
By PenjiP
This is not a good film and the rating it has in here is misleading. All around bad and the one star is being generous.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst. Movie. Ever. January 2, 2013
I think Osiris releases some decent indie films. This was not one of them. Without a doubt the WORST movie I've ever seen in my life.

Awful acting is magnified by a terrible script. It feels like a college student movie with no budget: terrible camerawork. Choppy editing. Awful acting. i feel sorry for every actor in this film, but I feel worse for everyone who is sucked into watching it because of the flagrantly false reviews here on Amazon!

I want to take a shower to wash the stink of this movie off me. Its a horror movie, alright: The subject manner was horrifically disturbing. That a mind goes where this movie took me is beyond comprehension. That any studio or distribution company would say, "Yes! This movie!" Is unfathomable.

This movie was so horrid that I want to sue for emotional damages! Whomever thought of this storyline is deeply disturbed, and needs help. The corporate idiots who decided to financially back this movie should be ashamed.

I need a weeklong Disney Movie marathon, a dozen cute puppies and a lobotomy to forget this movie happened. It was easily the most F-ed up movie I've ever had to endure. I exhausted from vehemently hating this movie so much.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Psychological Thriller That Pulls No Punches October 24, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
First of all I have to say the very second you begin watching Deer Crossing it draws you into its sick and depraved little world. This is not so much a horror film as it is much more than that. It's a psychological thriller that is uniquely disturbing. There are so many intense moments in this film leaving you feeling very uneasy. Writer/Director Christian Grillo pulls no punches in that respect. Just about every scene was superbly crafted as if it was the most important scene in the film.

In regards to the film's cast, there are some seriously stellar performances by some familiar talent including Doug Bradley ("Hellraiser"), Ernie Hudson ("Ghostbusters"), Christopher Mann (HBO's "The Wire" & "Michael Clayton") and Laura Lynn Cottrel ("The Replacements" & "Booley"). However as good as these actors' performances were, I was most impressed by K.J. Linhein who portrays Lukas Walton, the story's main antagonist. To put it simply this character is very evil and very real. There is nothing cerebral or mysterious about him. Lukas Walton is a monster that you will never want to know or ever associate with. Another notable performance is that of Carmela Hayslett who portrays the Child Interrogation Specialist, Olivia Brice. The empathy in her eyes when 14 year old Cole played by Kevin Fennell explains his experience is heart breaking and even the most hardened of souls watching this film can relate to her emotion in this particular scene.

Overall Deer Crossing is a very entertaining film that keeps you enthralled with side stories and some truly twisted twists that culminate very well at the end. There is a sequel in the works which I was excited to hear since there is more to the story of Cavin County that needs to be discovered.
