Grade 4-6-Everything one might want to know about white-tailed deer, mule deer, and elk can be found here. In five chapters, their habitat, feeding habits, camouflage, mating, growth, and relationship with humans are covered. The positive ending, promoting the possibility of people and nature living together in harmony, is a wonderful conclusion to this well-written book. Patent's flowing style makes the reading interesting as well as informative. Numerous full-color photographs enhance the presentation; each includes a caption. A great addition to the animal science section of any library.

Gr. 4-6. After defining common characteristics of cervids, the deer family, Patent devotes chapters to white-tailed deer, mule deer, and elk and to preservation issues, especially hunting. Common questions (How are antlers different from horns?) are answered clearly, and treatment of cervid mating, birthing, and the raising of young is extensive and free from anthropomorphism. The chapter on deer and elk overpopulation is nonsentimental and direct, suggesting cost and effectiveness limitations to resettlement programs, as opposed to hunting or harvesting. Though many are small, Mu{¤}noz's photographs offer striking glimpses of the animals in their natural habitat. References for further study are current. Mary Harris Veeder
